Samuel Jones Higginson, as Roy said, was the son of John.  His mother is named as Louisa.  A John Higginson married a Louisa Jones, 12/2/1839, Hove, Sussex so very much after the fact!

Thanks for looking.  The Higginson family seems to be the best so far.

How can I look further for this family, esp Samuel?  I do see a few HIGGINS on Aussie convict records - the first names of Thos or Jno or John or Josh may perhaps belong to this man. However none of them is of the right age or was convicted anywhere near Sussex.  Of course, it's very possible that he did not stay in Sussex.

I think his origins will remain unknown.

The information re his birth comes from his eldest child's birth certificate, 1870 where his age is given by his wife as 46; he died in 1870...

Joshua was married in 1860 but the first (known) children (twins) were not born till ten years later which seems odd too.

Judith, didn't you check the NSW BDM  ???
The twins were the last born, youngest & the only surviving children in 1870 ;)

Good finds, Merlin.  Sorry, the info was incomplete when I started this earlier thread - stupidly relying on what I was told by the person i amhelping.  :-[

i suspect that ordering the first child's certificate may be more helpful - or not!

Is the 1860 marriage record from a transcription agent, NSW BDM registry typed or photocopy or a Parish/Church registry transcript, typed or photocopy?

It's a typed transcription from NSW BDM registers by one of the approved agents.  I fear I may have to have a proper search of the church records.  I'm the opposite to JM - find NSW records a bit out of my field! However, it's the earlier info I'm really after, although obviously any parent/birth info given would be very useful.

Best I hie myself off there, then.  St Philip's Warkworth is now part of Singleton Anglican parish so  it should be there.

Many thanks as always, Merlin.
