John Watson
« on: Sunday 15 June 14 21:33 BST (UK) »
I'm looking for any information on John Watson (Cotton Manufacturer) of Woodsby(?) House, Skidby, Yorkshire. Who lost his money on the turf and came to Glasgow early in 19th Century with his 2 sons Richard (b: 1794) and Henry (b:1795), where he started a business as a Lithographer, for a time edited a paper called "The Northern Looking Glass" (along the lines of Punch). His wife I think was Elizabeth but possibly died before John came to Glasgow.

Any help would be appreciated

John Watson's son Richard went on to be Factor of Possil Estates in Glasgow owned by Campbell family. Henry (b 1795 - d 1875) buried Largs. He came to"Ashcraig" Skelmorlie in 1820 to lay out grounds for Campbell owner of sugar plantations, remained as factor gardener. He was married twice.

Hi Thermo
Can you state how you believe he was of Woodsby(?) House, Skidby, Yorkshire please.

Could it be Woodhouse Farm / Woodhouse Grange at Raywell which is a few miles from Skidby ??

The reason I ask is because I have been doing research into the Watson family of Kirk Ella and of Woodhouse Farm, Raywell, Cottingham, so I am thinking there could be a connection, you can read about this family on Rootschat by clicking on this link:
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=533187.0
You will find mentioned Woodhouse etc on page 11

Hi Bendywendy

My family acquired a family tree given to H.R McGechen by William Watson in his 85th year, 1943. He died that year. Transcribed as Woodsby (?) House, Skidby, Yorkshire. It may be Woodhouse, but none of the names match. Could Woodsby be a corruption of your reference to Wauldby

1841 cen @ Wauldby.
James Watson, 50. Farmer.
Mary Mitchell, 55.
Both born in County.
6 Servants.
HO107/1218/23 /3/ 3 p 9

1851 cen @ Wauldby.  Mistranscribed as Wandlby.
James Watson, Head, Unm, 60. Farmer & Land Holder of 1200 acres. 20 Labs.  B. Wauldby, Yorks
Mary Mitchell,  -------, Unm, 63.                                                                              B. Drax, Yorks
William Mitchell, Visitor, Unm, 33. Silk Weaver.                                                      B. Swanland
7 Servants.
Appears to be the main/only large land holder and employer in Wauldby.
HO107/2360/365 p 3

I have a marriage notice for John Watson and Elizabeth Linnecar dated 20/03/1795.

Hi
Henry and Richard were baptised as well as a dau Mary at All Saints, Wakefield.

I have found the marriage you mentioned, this was at Wakefield a long way from Skidby. On the actual marriage document it states that John Watson was of the Parish of All Saints, Wakefield as was Elizabeth Linnecar are you sure this is the correct marriage and maiden surname ?

If you don't have the Baptism for Elizabeth I think this could be it:
Elizabeth Linaker 23 May 1762 All Saints, Wakefield. F.Richd Linaker
Index: P01830-1  -  System: England-ODM  -  Films: 0098546-0098548

Found these online about a Richard Linnecar:
Have a look at the subscribers and see if any names match: https://archive.org/stream/miscellaneouswo00linngoog#page/n6/mode/2up

March 13th, 1800. – Richard Linnecar, a coroner at Wakefield died... http://www.parishmouse.co.uk/yorkshire/an_old_yorkshiremans_journal_1771_to_1812

So, if this is the correct John Watson and his family then how did he come to be living at Skidby ???

Found this death for an Elizabeth Watson spouse of John Watson @ Hull 30 Aug 1810 from Parish Registers of Holy Trinity Church, Hull - so I wonder where she is buried ???

Have you found John and his sons on the Scottish Census's and if so does it give places of births for them ???

So that sorts that out then, pity about just stating England, rather remiss of him  :-\

I will see what I can find for a John Watson, Commercial Traveller both in Wakefield, West Yorkshire and in East Yorkshire too.

I will try and find the burial place for this Elizabeth Watson too or a Monumental Inscription, hopefully as her father was so prominent there will have been a headstone.
