Annyalla , Drumgallon , Co. Monaghan
« on: Saturday 08 March 08 17:03 GMT (UK) »
Hi Everyone ,

Could some one possiblt tell me a little bit about this area , and also a Roman Catholic Church called St. Michaels .

It is said that my family , the Flanigan's came from Annyalla, Co. Monaghan

Edward Flanigan married a Margaret Donnelly

children -

Margaret Anne  , Francis , Patrick

Edward Flanigan was killed during an accident with a horse . He was a farmer , and the family called his place a forge .

Their parish church is supposed to be St. Michael 's RC.

I have only been able to find a few records on this family and thought i would try the Church to see if they had anything. Plus Edward and Margaret would be buried around there somewhere ??

Not any of the children , 2 are buried in America, and one in Drumcree .

Any help much appreciated,

Megan

It's a bit confusing as to where the Flanigan's actually lived.
Searching on www.thecore.com/seanruad brings up Annayalla in Clontibret Parish and a Annyalty in Tedavnet Parish while there is a Drumgallan in Clontibret Parish.
Checking the LDS catalogue finds the following (searching for 'clontibret'):
The Catholic parish of Clontibret covers a wide area of mid-Monaghan. It embraces 115 townlands of 136 in the civil parish of Clontibret. There are three districts with chapels: Annyalla (also spelled Annayalla), Doohamlet and Clontibret. The parish church is St. Michael the Archangel in Annayalla.
The above reference is for a church history but doesn't say anything about baptisms, etc.
Knowing the correct places and names brings up websites:
www.parishofclontibret.com/churches.htm (lovely photos, history, etc.)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clontibret

Thanks Aghadowey,

I am glad some one else thinks all of this is confusing also !!

But judging by what you sent me, I guess they were in the civil parish of Clontibret , and they would have gone to St. Michaels the Archangel.

The article you sent also states that there are 2 cemeteries for that Church.
One old and the new one.

I guess Edward and Margaret Flanigan must be in the old one .

Could you tell me if Co. Monaghan Church records are accesible , or do you have to contact the actual Church for permission ?

The confusion was in your first post- "Annyalla, Drumgallon, Co. Monaghan" which looked like Annyalla townland was in Drumgallon parish (should be Drumgallan) instead of which both are townlands in the civil parish of Clontibret. In Irish research the townland and parish are both very important for locating any records.
The records (if they still exist) are not in LDS catalogue but not sure if they are held locally. You could try contacting the church directly to see if they would search the records for you or if they know anyone local who could do the searching for you for a small fee (genealogy centres tend to charge outragious prices for any information).

Mary,

I had the birth record for Margaret Anne, but I DIDN'T have the record for Edwards death !!!!

I have been searching for any type of Edward and Margaret and have never been able to find anything !!  You have made my day !!!

Thank you very much , it at least gives me a start on him ..

I have a bunch of old photos from my great aunt's visit with family in Cloghan in 1933. Among them is one of my aunt with "Mrs. Flannigan"
Mrs. Flannigan is on the left and my aunt, Anne Dympna Gannon is on the right.

That might be my Grandmother (Mrs Flannigan) see attached picture of her 3 Children.

Correction: It's their auntie Minnie Flannigan (teacher) who beat them frequenty at school, we were told.
She had a son Fr Patrick Flannigan (Fr Packie) who became Dean Flannigan in Enniskillen, his father was P.C. John Flannigan a member of the RIC (Royal Irish Constabulary) based at the Police Barricks in Cremartin, bought by Gerry in the mid 60s.
The main Flannigan homestead was Annagh.
This reunion picture was taken in the 60s, all gone now RIP: http://www.radiofones.com/annagh.jpg
Attached is a picture of St. Michael's Church, Annyalla.
