Westlake family: Thomas and too many Elizabeths
« on: Sunday 06 April 14 11:32 BST (UK) »
Hi
Thomas Westlake is born, I hope in 1798 in Crediton, Devon.
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/J79W-C4C
This fits with the 1851 census and others where he is living in Stoke Canon with Wife Elizabeth.
I hope this is the marriage
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/N2CH-3Y5

Then the real problem.
Thomas' parents are John Westlake and Elizabeth, but who is Elizabeth ?

I am favouring Elizabeth Wright but others believe she is Elizabeth Darby or Elizabeth Abrahams.

None of this is helped by Thomas seniors parents being another John and Elizabeth ?

I would appreciate any help with confirming which Elizabeth she is.

Familysearch have a 16th October 1794 marriage in Crediton between John Westlake and Elizabeth Wright.
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/N25J-3ZT

There are no other John Westlake marriages in Devon that seem to fit- the only others are in Ashwater North Devon or Stoke Damerel near Plymouth.
I have to say that our ancestors' insistence on persistently using names like John or Elizabeth was very thoughtless to their descendants when Ezekiel or Hepzibah would have made research so much easier! ( Unless you inherited the name, of course.) ::)

Thank you. I do appreciate your time spent looking at this.

I had got to the overload point of Thomas and Elizabeth's !!   ::)
At that point it is easier to convince yourself that the many trees with different Elizabeths have to be worth considering. :-\
The ancestors are not helpful in a couple of our branches. This one is about six generations ( that I know of) of Thomas with wife children and / or mother Elizabeth.
Then I have another with Roberts marrying Hannahs for at least four generations.
I am one of three cousins with the same name. My children have names that NO ONE else anywhere in either family have  ;D

I've had generations of Williams and Marys to contend with -very confusing. That said I also thought my children's names weren't shared by the rest of the family but that was long before family history research My son shares a name with his paternal great grandfather-and great-great, while my daughter's names also crop up on both sides of the family. I had no idea when the names were chosen! :o
Have you seen this posting? It looks as if you aren't the only one with Westlake problems!

You don't know how happy that makes me !! ;D
I will see if I can fit them to the family I am working on.

They have to be the most unimaginative family there ever was when it comes to names.

I have followed John Westlake and Elizabeth Wright. His parents are John Westlake and Elizabeth Tucker and grandparents John Westlake and Elizabeth Gorwin. And Elizabeth Mathews father is Thomas !!
A large cup of strong black coffee needed !!
