Lark Hill Court, St Margaret's Bank, Rochester, Kent
« on: Sunday 01 June 14 07:34 BST (UK) »
My Great Grandfather's parents were living at 8 Lark Hill Court, St Margaret's Bank, Rochester in the 1851 census. Can't find it in a street directory today, although did find a will reference to some one who owned the Nag's Head Hotel, and several tenements in Lark Hill Court.
Does anyone know if it was close to the Nags Head Hotel ( which appears is still on its original site today ) for sure ?

Hi, I have a street directory 1898, which gives Lark Hill Court between 262 and 264 High Street

Rochester, and the Nags Head PH is 292 High Street, so not too far apart. It looks as tho' there

was 10 properties in Lark Hill court.

                 Hope this helps.

Thanks Remann. Although is 262 High St still considered as being in St Margaret's Bank, it is on the west bank of the Medway rather than the east ? My G  Grandfather was baptised at St Margarets of Antioch on 2nd March 1851 where they are listed as being in St Margarets Bank, and I think the Census was in April, so thought they would still be in same place. Maybe they moved across to Lark Hill Crt ( which is really in Frindsbury or Strood ? ) in the interim.
Anyway many thanks for your help.

My apologies Remann, think I have been bamboozled by Google Maps. There is a 262 High St on both sections of High St on either side of the Medway. After looking at things a bit more closely, I now realise the 262 you are referring to, is only about 200 metres away from the Nags Head Hotel, and is most definitely in St Margarets Bank

Mike

Hi,  On Google street view, it is clear to see there is a space between nos.262 and 264 High Street

Rochester, which now has a door/gate in place, but I presume, in 1851, would have been access

   leading to  Lark Hill Court.
