I was wondering about this too. Yesterday I found a George & Elizabeth PEACOCK on the 1851 census, only Peacocks in Bugthorpe.

PEACOCK George       35 Farm Labourer  (b) Snape
                Elizabeth    31                                Bugthorpe
                John            10                                    "
                George         7                                     "
                Sarah           3                                     "
                Elizabeth      1                                     "

Then did a check on the IGI and the children are the same for Nicholas? and Elizabeth.
Children:
      1. John             (c) 14th Feb 1841  Bugthorpe
      2. George         (c) 10th Dec 1843   "
      3.  Sarah          (c) 15th Aug 1847  "
      4. Elizabeth       (c) 11th Aug 1850  "
      5. Charles Smith (c) 10th Oct 1852  "

And it appears William SOLLITT (b) 1843 is the son of Harper SOLLITT and Maria ?
And Harper (c) 4 Dec 1814 Westow is the son of William SOLLITT & Elizabeth HARPER.

On the 1871 census for Fridaythorpe

SOLLITT  Harper  Head Widow  56   Ag Lab    Mennithorpe
              Sarah   dau-in-law  M   23                 Bugthorpe
              Elizabeth  g-dau           5                      "
              William      g-son           2                  Fridaythorpe
              Hannah    g-dau           5mts                  "

Avongirl I have more on these Sollitts if you would like. Though they don't appear to be related to mine at this stage.

Sandra

Sande,

William's father was Harper the details of the marriage are:

Name/age/status/occupation/abode/father/father's occupation

William Sollat (sic)/22/Bachelor/farm servant/Buckthorpe/Harper Sollat/Laborour

Sarah Peacock/20/Spinster/Buckthorpe/George Peacock/Laborour

both signed (but spelt William Sollit)

Witnesses Robert Bielby and Hannah Weatherall (?)

Thanks for that Pinetree. This will be quite a surprise for Avongirl. I had done a bit of research on William awhile ago but had forgotton. I have him on the 1871 census somewhere too but can't find it at the moment. Think he was a Labourer working on a farm close by.

I'll be keeping my eye out for TOLLITS & COLLITS in the future. Another spelling I've come across is POLLIT.  :)

Sande,

I've been looking into the ASHTON branch of my tree and have just discovered a Caroline ASHTON married Edward SOLLITT in York Registration District Jun Q 1868.

From 1881 census Caroline was born in Huntington abt. 1849 and Edward in Stillington abt. 1848.

Caroline is not a direct ancestor but I think I know how she fits into my tree but need to get to the records to prove it.

Just thought it was an interesting coincidence following this thread  ;)

Hi Pinetree,
I have some details on Edward SOLLITT though no connection to me at the present time. Just checked the 1851 census for Stillington H01072370
Looks like
SOLED? Thomas  Head Mar 40   Groom         Hutton Hambo
            Harriet   wife   Mar  39                   Barton-le-Street
            Sharlot   dau           21 Ourdoor Lab    "         "
            Elizabeth dau         16      "         "       Crambe
            Edward   son           5                       Stillington
            William    son           3                             "

1871    Gildersome
SOLLITT Edward  Head Mar  23   Coachman  Stillington
             Caroline  wife   Mar  22                     Huntington
             Thomas   son           10 mts               Guildersome

Children I had for Thomas & Harriet are:

1. Charlotte                           abt 1830
2. Mary                                  abt  1832
3. Elizabeth Hansele [c] 20th Apr 1835  Crambe
4. Thomas?                           abt 1839
5. Noah  ?                             abt 1852      Stillington

I'll check the 1841 census, see what I can find there.  :)

Sande,

Thanks for all the census information.

Will have to try and piece all this together - looks like there may be some connection with you SOLLITTs as Edward's Dad was from Hutton

All the best.

Hi Sande. Just registered with RootsChat and noticed you are researching the Sollitt family. You mentioned Fanny Sollitt. Well she was Fanny Layborn Smith and married my 3rd great grand uncle Thomas Sollitt (b 1839).According to my records I think she was his second wife. I would love to know what information you might have about the Sollitt family and how you are related. My grandmother was Evelyn Sollitt. Look forward to hearing from you.
Many thanks.
Viv.
