Silver and lead merchant Willington Quay 1860's
« on: Friday 16 May 14 17:04 BST (UK) »
Folks,

Wondering if anyone out there might be descended from a Mr. Cook who was a silver and lead merchant in Willing ton Quay in the 1860 -70 's?

From my studies there was a few copper works in the area and the silver, lead and copper were found in the same ore.

I'm interested in the business rather than anything 'personal' as my ggfather was an employee.

Thanks.

Are you sure it is Cook?
In 1856 the Willington Quay Lead Works passed to William I. Cookson, great-grandson of Isaac Cookson, Newcastle Merchant from Penrith. http://www.twsitelines.info/smr/2106

Stan,

I'm working from  an Old Bailey transcript. I know it has errors in it as my ggf's brother (in-law) is recorded as John Connell, when if fact it was John Connor.

Cook may well be Cookson, as my ggf was probably broad Irish and might easily have been mis-heard.

Cooksons have a history on Tyneside which might be easier to research.

Thanks,

Irish.
