C F Partoon, Dundee Photographer
« on: Thursday 13 February 14 14:27 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone know when the above photographer was active in Dundee? I have seen a reference in the Scottish Screen Archive to him (or the company) still being active in 1921 but I suspect that he was in business well before then, perhaps back to the Victorian era.  Alex.

Ev, this fits with this entry for 1901:

Charles Parton  30, Photographer Aparaton b. England
Jessie Parton 24 wife b. Edinburgh

Address: 2 Baldovan Ter, Dundee

Corrected submitted entries to show couple as Partoon, and Charles with the middle name of Frederick.

Thanks EV and Monica. That all makes sense and gives a strong indication of the likely length of his career as a photographer. It is a marvellously unusual name which is a big help. Alex.

His death, in 1940, was recorded in the local Dundee papers. Apparently, he moved to Dundee when aged 19 and began his photography career in the employment of a William Ferrier of Tally Street.

See this picture for where he would have worked:

Apparently
Quote
"William Ferrier, whose photographer's studio was in Tally Street, studied in the United States, come to Dundee in 1878

Then, around 1908, Partoon opened his own premises in Nethergate.

He pops up in a few newspaper items over the years and the Dundee Courier of October 5th 1933 has a lovely wedding picture of his son (who was in the business with him) and new daughter-in-law.

and 1911/12 Post Office Directory has listing for him in Nethergate:

Partoon was a well-known photographer in Dundee early in the 20th century. Here is an example of his work - The lady is playing the title role in the opera Nadeshda for Dundee Operatic Society in 1924.
