In 1911 John Mackay, aged 8yrs was living at 25 Charles St. Dundee. Would anyone know if there was a school close to this area which he might have attended? Blinshall

He could have attended Cowgate Primary School which would be about the nearest one to Charles Street.

Also could have been Victoria Road School, which wasn't far away from Charles Street. By the by was he Catholic, if so it would have been St Mary's Forebank.

Hi Jenc, thank you for your information re Victoria Rd School.  I do not think he would have gone to a Catholic school.  Do you know if it is possible to search old school records? Blinshall

One hopes he wasn't at work in the mills - Dundee had a dreadful reputation for allowing under age working. My Gran said she went to mill school half time and worked the rest. What were the rest of the family employed at?

Hi Jen, in the 1911 census it states that John Mackay is a student, however his stepfather is a worker at the jute mills, but I don't think I can read anymore into it.  My father, who is John Mackay, didn't ever mention working at the mills, so hopefully it wasn't required of him!  Thanks for your interest.Blinshall.
