I am sure NZ has the 1881/1891 for Alithia with her Husband Joseph so I wont post here.
I really do not know what we have established other than;
- Possibly 2 Purlands Fathered Elizas Children Caroline and Alithia or they lied on M/Certs
- We have found no Marriage for Eliza to any Purland
-  I cant find either Purland, Malster or Miller in 1841 Census

Hi Trish & Sue & NZ

Ahah...... ;)
Sister Caroline PURLAND (whose birth I think may be on FreeBMD as PALLANT in  Dec Qtr 1847, Wangford)

MARRIAGE: Wangford Sep Qtr 1847
James PALLANT and Eliza MILES on same page, ref: Vol 13, pg 773

Someone has postem'd the entry back in 2006 to say:
"Surname: Purland . The source given for this is: Family name"

1841: Irgate? Street, Beccles, Suffolk
HO107 /  Piece 1039 /  Book: 4 / Folio: 10 /Page: 12
James PALLANT 35, Ag Lab
Sarah PALLANT 35
Samuel PALLANT 35
Mary MAYES? (MAYER?)  11,
All born in Suffolk, except Mary

Not a Maltster or Miller - but perhaps he worked on farm that grew and milled the grain, and perhaps even went on to Maltster  ;D it. It was common on marriage certs to talk up a father's occupation (Ag Lab's becoming Farmers etc?)

Can't say if the 3 PALLANTS are a married couple and a brother/cousin, or 3 siblings...but
There is a death of a Sarah PALLANT in Jun 1845.

Perhaps Alethia simply didn't know or mis-remembered the name of  her father who died around the same time she was born, and whom she never knew?

Cheers

;D Looks like it couming together very well!

Alethia's birth might tidy the mystery, I reckon - to see who her father was.

PURLAND's were associated with Rental and Sales of property on Ingate St, Beccles in the 1860's & 1870's.

Would you believe I have only just sat down and worked through all the replies - so sorry folks, you did so much work - big thanks.

This is my summary then:
Eliza (don't know her maiden name) was married to John Miles and had two boys: John & Robert
in 1843 John died. In 1847 Eliza married James and had two girls: Caroline and Alethia.
James died in 1849.
This is possibly why the girls haven't named him correctly on their marriage certs etc (as they didn't really ever know him)

who is the mary miles listed on 1861 census then?

and.. back to my original qustn..who are the purlands of beccles?! Where did my James come from?
