William Herbert born 1859 in Llansantffraed Cardiganshire
« on: Tuesday 29 July 14 13:50 BST (UK) »
Hello
Does anyone have any information on William Herbert born in Llansantffraed in 1859.
His brother was Job Herbert, his mother was Mary Herbert, father unknown.
After his mother dies in 1865 I do not know what happened to him, did he go on to marry and have a family, I know his brother went to Birmingham and raised a family.

I expect you have this, but here is 1861 census

Glannafon, Llansantfraid
Mary Herbert unm 35
Job illegit son 7
William illegit son 2.   all bn Llansanfr.

I have never seen illegitimacy stated on a census like this before. (Transcribed as stepson in index, but image says illegit son)  Interesting there is no occupation, one wonders what they were living on.

Hello
Yes I do have this, Job is my great grandfather but he called himself Job Herbert Harris do not know why.
I have wondered how Mary managed with 2 boys, she never registered for poor relief with the church as far as I can see so someone was helping out. It could have been her father who was a farmer in the area, but I do not know for sure. I think it was good that she did not give them up as was often the case.
Not sure what happened to the boys after she died, Job disappears but I think though not sure that William worked as a servant (indoors) on a farm in the area.
