Hi,

I reasearch aviation crash sites in Northumberland.
I have just about located the site of this chaps crash.

My interest is in the grave at St SBarnabas of:-
A312       Sgt. J. W. Harris    1943       W.G (R. A. F);    in situ

Can you tell me if it has been damaged due to the building work?

regards

Chris D.

Hi Chris,
From looking at the plans above I think your grave is affected. On the plan there is a W312A grave ( perhaps the W is for war?). This grave is at the front of the church and at the moment all the monuments have been removed. I think some will be put back but your grave might be where the new staircase entrance is going to be (see my photos below).

View of High Street side of Church - where grave W312A is positoned:-

View of model showing changes to Church from High Street side, showing the new staircase entrance:-

View from Church to the High Street showing that gravestones have been removed :-

View from inside :-

For anyone interested the next open day is on SATURDAY  3rd  SEPTEMBER  2011 from 10.00am  ~  2.00pm. Access from the High Street.

Hope this helps you,

Sharon

Chris I forgot to add this on :-

This is  an extract from the new graveyard plan above. From the key to the plan it looks like  grave W312A is of architectural/ historical interst - to be retained and a war grave. But as you can see it will be situated right at the top of the stairs into the entrance, so it remains to be seen if they keep it there.

I'll post more photos from the next open day and keep you updated.

Hi Sharon,
Taken from one of your links earlier.

Extract from the Design and Access Statement, St Barnabas Church, Erdington October 2009:                                                                                                                              Discussions and a site meeting have been held with Simon Wilson, Regional Supervisor, of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission in respect of the several War Graves within the churchyard. In particular, the grave and headstone of Sergeant J W Harris (grave ref: A312) has been discussed. This falls outside of the area of the proposed extension but within the new external paving. The accepted proposal is to raise the headstone to suit the new higher paving levels (approx. 500mm) and set it within a gravelled space for emphasis. The internment will be protected at the current ground level and need not be disturbed.

so it looks like plans are afoot to replace the head stone.

Chris

Well spotted Chris, I'd read everything when I originally posted it but not this morning. It'll be interesting to see what they'll do.

Hi all,
I haven't managed to get to any open days for St Barnabas this year but the good news is that it has been rededicated and will have Christmas services :-http://stbarnabaserdington.org.uk/index.php/services/

ITV had a litlle piece on it  here:-http://www.itv.com/news/central/story/2012-12-16/church-reopens-after-fire/

There are open days in January to have a look around the church:-http://stbarnabaserdington.org.uk/index.php/about-us/open-days-january-2013/

Merry Christmas,

Sharon

Well better late than never I suppose, I've finally managed to see the inside of St Barnabas on a weekday although I hadn't got a decent camera with me!

(The grave photo of Sergeant Harris is for Chris.)

I am remembering WW1 military men who are buried at St Barnabas and adding to their life stories on https://livesofthefirstworldwar.org/community/1059 So if anyone has information about them either let me know or add information to their page yourself.

many thanks, Sharon
