Seeking John Lemm born about 1797 Birmingham
« on: Monday 08 September 14 15:07 BST (UK) »
Hi All,

I'm seeking a birth or baptism record for a John Lemm.

According to the 1851 census he was born around 1797 in Birmingham. I know no more then that.

He married an Elizabeth Day in 1817 in Sheffield, I have the records for that. They seem to have lived in Sheffield for the rest of their lives and had 4 children Mary, Thomas, James and Charles.

So far I've had no luck in finding a birth record for him. I've tried variations on Lemm with no joy.

There is one for a John Lemm in Birmingham in 1803, but that seems a bit far out for me.

Thank you for reading.

Hi

The earlier census, rounded the year of birth up or down by 5 years, also he may have been a few years old when he was baptised, Have you followed the John Lemm b 1803, on any other records,

Hi,

Thanks MargP, I bagsied it in the end. I couldn't find a trace of an alternate John Lemm born in 1803 so I've made a leap that they are one and the same.

So I now know that his parents were John and Mary. I believe they had another daughter, Elizabeth, who was born in 1793 also in Birmingham.

I've assumed that if they married it would have been around 1790ish.

I haven't been able to find any further trace of them. I was misled for a while by a similar sounding family called Lim, but I've checked the originals and the spelling is pretty clear and they seem to be a different family altogether.

John Lemm Junior (1803) was a table knife maker and he eventually ended up in Sheffield, I assume he was attracted by the industry there.

I'm speculating wildly now but it did lead me to wonder if John Lemm senior was in the same profession. I wonder if he also travelled for his work, which might explain why I can find no marriage for him and Mary.

Anyway, thank you for reading.

Another child?

Lemm, Emily (of Sheffield, born 1817-08-07).
Baptised September 14, 1817, by Thos. Sutton at Sheffield Parish Church, Church Street, Sheffield.
Parents name(s) are Elizabeth & John (Cutler).

I find it a bit hard to believe that he was 14 when he got married and immediately started a family though I can't see another John Lemm either.......  Does the marriage record refer to him being a minor or was the marriage by licence with consent of parents?

Bev

Edit:
The 1841 census states year of birth to be 1796.
Ancestry has him mistranscribed as John Leen aged 45 living in Ecclesall Bierlow and born out of county.
(I think you'll find only the 1841 census rounded the ages, and they were always down, never up.)

Reed, Elmer - Hunts.

That's a good point about his age. Maybe I've messed up here.

I caught the 1841 census with the mistranscription.

I'll have to go away and have a think about this.
