David Thomas (Rhiwe, Llangadock)
« on: Tuesday 07 January 14 19:34 GMT (UK) »
David Thomas is the Grandfather of my 6 x Grandmother, Jane,  and I would like to try and find out a bit more about him and possibly find out who Jane's grandmother was. (would love to know more about her father but think that may be harder)

Taken from Annals & Antiquities of Wales:
Jane, daughter of John ap William ap Jenkin of Cilbridwen, Llanddeusant and Mary, his wife, only daughter of David Thomas of Rhiwe, llangadock, who also possessed Bedwhirion, Castellcoch, Carreglwyd, Cilgerthen and Cilbridwin, Llanddeusant and an estate in the adjoining parish of Mothvey.

The only dates I can offer are that Jane died March 1852 and if going by the census, she was born c 1772. She married 1st John Joseph of Pant-y-Gwim, Llanddeusant and after he died David Thomas Esq of Abersenny House, Co Brecon.

Any help appreciated or if dates are too far back, someone to say "too difficult, stop looking" :)

Thank you very much

possible baptism for Jane
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/X1BH-H4N

Bond for her marriage
http://wales.aquabrowser.com/default.ashx?q=marriage+bonds

There's a possible will on the NLW site
http://cat.llgc.org.uk/cgi-bin/gw/chameleon?skin=profeb&lng=en
for a David Thomas of Llanddeusant proved 10-6-1803, but written 10-6-1795 which mentions his wife Gwenllian, sons Morgan Thomas (holding land in Llangadock) & Thomas Thomas, son-in-law John William Jenkin and grandchildren to David/children to John William Jenkin, David, Thomas, Jane, Mary & Margaret, all under 21 & unmarried. I can't quite make out some of the writing, but Thomas gets somewhere called Tir y Garreg Lwyd and the place in Llangadock is called something y Coed Mawr, I think.

Baptism for Margaret

Morgan Thomas' will from 1824 shows him to be in possession of Rhuie in Llangadock and Rhuie or variant (Rhiwiau?) might well be the something y Coed Mawr from the 1803 will.

Thank you so much osprey, looks very promising :)

please could you tell me how I could view / get a copy of the marriage bond?

I also saw this: Probate of the will of David Thomas, late of Rhwie, parish of Llangadock, co. Carmarthen, farmer, it is dated 1868 (definitely not mine maybe a relation?) (again not sure how to view)

Thank you once again for your help

Could that be the second husband of Jane? You can get a copy of the will

http://www.justice.gov.uk/courts/probate/copies-of-grants-wills

To get a copy of the bond, use the enquiry form from the NLW

http://www.llgc.org.uk/index.php?id=nlwenquiries

Some of the parish records for Llanddeusant have been transcribed for FreeReg.

http://www.freereg.org.uk/

Jane's marriage to David Thomas was 12-11-1814

John Joseph's will dated 28-6-1809 & proved 13-12-1809 mentions Jane, eldest son David John Joseph, youngest son John John Joseph, daughter Mary John Joseph and illegitimate daughter Ann John Joseph. Mary would not have had her share as she died before she was 21, buried 20-7-1827 aged 19, of Pantygwin. Possible baptism for John 28-2-1803.

Again Thank you so much Osprey for all your hard work :)
I really appreciate what you have done and the info you have given me.

I would like to ask another question: Jane's 1st Husband, John Joseph, is the line I follow (their son David is my 4 x grandfather)....in the Annals & Antiquities od Wales it is written that John died 1809 aged 64 which would make his year of birth 1745, I have found a baptism record a John Joseph, Llanddeusant, Carmarthenshire only the date given is 1742, Father Joseph Lewelin, (I also found the death for Joseph Lewelin 1746 and his will mentions wife Ann and son John...would I be taking a gamble thinking this is possibly my John Joseph??

Thank you

I don't think someone would appoint a young child as executor. The John mentioned in the will is under 21, but would be more than just a few years old. The 1742 baptism, as transcribed, is for a Jon.

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/X1BH-N38

and that is more likely to be a Jonathan. The abbreviation for John is Jno.

It could be that he was baptised in a parish whose records are not online and there are plenty of those. The ones for Llanddeusant start only in 1736
