McAdam in Kilmaronock
« on: Monday 30 December 13 19:16 GMT (UK) »
My Grt Grt Grandfather Walter McAdam was born in Kilmaronock, Dunbartonshire in 1803 and died Jamestown, Bonhill, Dunbartonshire in 1882. He moved to Jamestown sometime before 1841 and he was married to Catherine McMillan who I think came from Drymen, Stirlingshire. He worked as a "Printfield Worker". I believe his parents were John McAdam and Mary Peters. Any information about births, deaths and marriages of the McAdam family for the Kilmaronock area would be appreciated. Thank you.

Hi

Scotlands People is the main website for that type of info - it's pay per view via purchase of credits and as your search would be pre-1855 for most info - you would need to select Old Parish Registers (OPR's)

You could also try Family Search for births & marriages

https://familysearch.org/search
www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

Here's Walters marriage from FS

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XTG7-1ZZ

And one of their children

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XYZ8-GRH

Quote
I believe his parents were John McAdam and Mary Peters

Were their names obtained from his 1882 death cert?

If you are researching the children of Walter & Catherine - you would need to find each child on a census to get the name of their spouse/children to help find a marriage

1841 has John 8 Hugh 6 William 4 and Catherine 2

Thank you for your reply. I use Scotland's People and have information from there but mostly 1855 and on. I'll have a look at pre 1855 and also Family Search. According to Walter's death certificate his father was John but his mother is "unknown" Some of the other information I have is from other family trees on "Ancestry" I would be interested to hear if anyone has any information on the family when they lived in Kilmaronock. Thank you again.

The 1861 census shows John, Hugh, William & Catherine still unmarried

There are also 2 other children - Margaret b 1846/7 and Isabella b 1849/50

Hugh and Margaret are both still unmarried in 1871 but it looks like either daughter Catherine or Isabella married somebody called McLellan as there is a 9mth old Ann McLellan shown as grandson (not dtr) in household.  She is shown as the child of daughter Margaret who is shown as Mary
