Crewe station
« on: Wednesday 13 October 10 14:33 BST (UK) »
Hi
My ancestors travelled by train from Crewe to Greenoch in December 1865 (prior to sailing to Australia) and I am trying to find a photo/picture of Crewe station at this time. Picture Cheshire has nothing and so far googling has produced nothing. Does anyone have any ideas as to where I can look? Any suggestions gratefully accepted.

Hi

You could try the following link to the National railway Museum.  I believe it has a search facility, you may be lucky to get an old picture.

Hope this helps

Thanks a lot CCRAIL. I'll check out the links. You obviously know much more about railways than me and therefore know where to look.

Hi Tofgem,
I think you will struggle to find a photo of that period - film photography didn't come into use until the 1880s and anything before that will be very rare.

I attach a sketch of Crewe Station about 1848 which will give you some idea of what it may have been like.

Thanks a lot Peter. The station was rebuilt in 1867 so your picture is probably as contemporary as possible to the station as seen by George and Harriet in 1865.
Your help is very much appreciated.

Hi Pepsi, Interesting your sketch of crewe, had just been looking through these paintings of crewe station by Harry Watson and see that he must have painted from something very similar.
