Where is this address, in 1915 -
« on: Tuesday 25 March 14 16:36 GMT (UK) »
I am now searching angle #43 on my John Wallace conundrum.
I have found a miliary notation for a John Wallace and am trying to see if he is mine.

The address on the card is
372 South York Street, Glasgow.

Can anyone tell me if this is close to Govan?  or, rather, was close to Govan in 1915?

Thanks so much!

Hi

South York Street, Hutchesontown was in the Govan Reg Dist in 1901. It was subsequently  re-named to Moffat Street - http://www.oldglasgowpubs.co.uk/moffatstreet.html

Gadget, thank you!
I am looking to see what was at 372 - a house? hotel? pub?

Cheers

Although the Govan Parish and registration District did include the area, around 1907 it became a Registration district in its own right - Gorbals which was again split into wards with South York Street listed under Hutchesontown.

By 1915 it is unlikely that anyone living in that area would refer to their area as Govan  - even official records used the wards as District names.

Hi Falkyrn

If you note, the person on the card doesn't mention Govan or Gorbals - that is why Lorraine is asking about it:

The address on the card is
372 South York Street, Glasgow.

I was taking from the way the original poster posed the question that the person she was trying to trace was from Govan and that the named individual was a possible line of enquiry and that location was a possible link. Given that it is some distance from Govan (although within the old Registration District & Parish boundaries as you correctly pointed out) the gentleman may not be the one sought.

He died Govan:

Not sure what Lorraine's angle is? Death cert should give family names and age and then follow up on the 1911, I'd think.

(However, from a quick read of these threads, I'm not sure that I know what is required  :-\ )

Oh, I think I may have confused you.
I know where/when my John Wallace died but there are many discrepancies with him - as you can see with my other posts!

My angle was to see if I could find his attestation or military card to see if there is a notation of next of kin or anything that would ensure I am looking at the right John Wallace.

The card I saw was the one posted but again, it may not be the "right" man - the army number on this card and the one I have are not the same, tho the name is.

I have read that early in WWI, the govt used the same ID number for more than one man!

Any way .....long story short .... I don't think this particular John is mine.  My John Wallace definitely lived in Govan at the time of WWi.

Family lore says he was outside a pub when the army "volunteered" him to join!

Thanks for all your interest!

Yes, Loraine, I know. I read your threads - one was 10 pages and you had tremendous help.  He seemed to have stayed at the same address in Govan from his second marriage until his death.

'John Wallace' is fairly common - I had an uncle with those names  :)

Note that only about 30% of WW1 service records have survived.
