Welsh Roberts...and Foster.....and Parry???
« on: Wednesday 07 August 13 23:26 BST (UK) »
Hi
My Great, Great, Grandmother was Caroline Foster, born about 1807. She married Thomas Roberts, a tailor, on 21st July 1830 at St Nicholas, Liverpool, and a witness at the wedding was a Mary Anne Foster. Caroline died December 1835, aged 28, leaving behind a 4 year old son, Thomas and my Great Grandmother, Elizabeth,  not yet 2. In the 1851 census, young Thomas was living with his uncle and aunt, William and Jane Parry, aged 54 and 46 respectively. Could Jane have been a Foster? She was born about 1805 in Ruthven, Denbighshire, and Caroline about 1807 and I know nothing about her birth. And what about Mary Anne? Jane died April 1882. Her nephew Thomas had married a lass named Dorothy – no last name – who died December 1882 and is buried in the same grave, along with Thomas junior, so was Dorothy the daughter of Jane Parry which would also mean the two newly-weds were first cousins? And did Thomas Roberts, senior, a Welshman according to the 1861 census when he was visiting the Parry’s, return to Wales with his daughter after his wife’s death? There is no record of him or Elizabeth in Lancashire after the death of his wife. His whereabouts are unknown after his wife’s death and his daughter remained unknown until her marriage in Australia in 1855. I am hoping someone can help me sort out the connections between the Roberts, Parrys and Fosters of Wales.

Morning WR and Jason  :)

To help with the searches,  there is a previous thread here:

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=653256.0

Quite long and pretty thorough searching, so info on 1851 here:

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=653256.msg5001679#msg5001679

HO107/2187/103/22

In 1841 - at HO107/568/21/67/11

The 1871 census has Jane born Ruthin* and William born Whitford - RG10/3793/69/8

Search for a marriage between William and Jane -

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=653256.msg5002424#msg5002424

* I believe that the online Welsh records don't cover Ruthin.  I can't find a suitable baptism for William in Whitford - maybe close by or non-c.

Thomas Roberts, snr, in 1861 - RG9/2701/12/19  is down as born Ruthin*, circa 1811

First theory  - Jane was Thomas Roberts, snr's, sister.

* see my previous comment about Ruthin records  :-X

Some thoughts ~

On the 1861, Thomas Roberts, visitor to the Parry's is down as married. I'm not sure if this is the same Thomas Roberts, snr in 1851:

HO107/2227/254/7
12 Camp  Street, Manchester (off Deansgate)
Thomas Roberts, 37, tailor, b. Wales
Elizabeth, w, 37, b. do
Elizabeth, d, 3 or maybe 8, b. Manchester
Edward, s, 3 mths, b. do
John Foulkes, lodger, 21, tailor, b. Wales

Maybe in 1841 - Manchester again- same street:
HO107/573/16/5/5
Thomas Roberts, 30, Tailor, not b. county - maybe a w in end column!

This looks like it could be the two children - not far away-  writing difficult but it looks like the  head is Thomas Burns, 50, dyer, b. Ireland
These two have a / seperator so not same household!
HO107/569/11/6/6
Bk Queens Street, Deansgate
Thomas Roberts, 8
Elizabeth, 7
both born Lancashire

This is all tentative but put it up 'in case'

I can't find a death to "facilitate" this but there are these two marriages(first one as per Garstonite in a previous thread)

William Parry and Jane Thornton - 1828  St Mary Edgehill

and prior to this

Thomas Thornton and Jane Roberts -Sept 1826  St. Nicholas,Liverpool(as per Thomas Roberts marriage)
Witnesses  Thomas Roberts and William Richards

Regards
Roger
