« on: Saturday 19 February 11 04:36 GMT (UK) »
Hi
I am trying to find the parentage of Archibald Martin b c1783 who married Margaret Jamieson 1806 and farmed at Larzageen. On their marriage record it states that his father was Bryce Martin of Lubas (deceased)

•Death: 8 MAR 1785 in SCOTLAND ISLE OF BUTE 46 YRS OLD
•Event: Event 1 10 MAR 1785 BURIED IN KINGARTH
•Occupation: FARMER LUBAS
•Residence: LUBAS FARM ISLE OF BUTE

Marriage 1 Ann (Mcfee)(mcfie) MAFEE b: ABT. 1740
•Married: WFT Est. 1768-1783
Children
1. Margaret MARTIN b: 25 DEC 1769
2. Mary MARTIN b: 20 AUG 1771
3. Janet MARTIN b: 3 MAR 1775 in KINGARTH
4. John MARTIN b: 28 JUN 1777 in KINGARTH
5. Alexander MARTIN b: 29 OCT 1778
6. James MARTIN b: 20 FEB 1781 in LUBAS FARM BUTE SCOTLAND
7. Archibald MARTIN b: 27 DEC 1782
8. Bryce MARTIN b: 27 DEC 1782
9. William MARTIN b: 12 MAR 1785

~~~~~~~~
I was wondering if any one could corroborate this
Thanks
Gillian
Hi Gillian
Have you had a look at this site www.butesonsanddaughters.co.uk?
Just looking at a couple of their pages to do with farms www.butesonsanddaughters.co.uk/farmsag.shtml and www.butesonsanddaughters.co.uk/farmsho.shtml - if you 'find and search' for the name Bryce, you can see a number of references to a Bryce Martin. Not sure if this is  later that the period you are looking at.
Yes I had found that - it is a bit later - but given the Martin connection with LUbas - is interesting!
Thanks
There is also this  http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/ButeshireGenWeb/2000-12/0976921940 which shows a marriage for Bryce and Ann in 1778 in Lubas.
Possible reference to death of Bryce in 1784 due to the smallpox epidemic of the period (note the spelling of Martin) http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/ButeshireGenWeb/2000-12/0977015777
Monica
Thanks for that - I wonder if it was the same person who contributed to the Ancestry tree - I might have to order the films she talks about and have a go at trying to find the information
Cheers
Gillian, certainly would be good to check for yourself the entries. I have a question mark on the possible marriage date of 1778.
Using the batch code for Bute births - C115552 - brings up this entry for example, actual extract from the OPRs:
Nelly MARTYNE b. 27 MAY 1773 in Kingarth, Bute
Parents: Bryce MARTYNE and Agnus MACFEE
Agnus/Agnes is a common variant of Ann, see www.whatsinaname.net/php/search.php?action=search2&search_name=agnes
The earliest I can see on IGI is the birth of Margaret in 1769. Just enter the name Bryce for father's first name and it will bring up 3 entries for Bryce and Ann - all actual extract.
Monica
Added: Added IGI batch codes for marriages in Kingarth don't start before 1837 so not sure how to search further for these as they may not be available having been lost or destroyed over the years perhaps?
Hmmm using Family search Pilot and the mispelling I come up with
 Mary Mertyne
 Scotland Births and Baptisms, 1564-1950
 birth: 20 Aug 1771
residence: Kingarth, Buteshire, Scotland
parents: Bryce Mertyne, Ann Macfee
John Mertyne
Scotland Births and Baptisms, 1564-1950
 birth: 28 Jun 1777
residence: Kingarth, Buteshire, Scotland
parents: Bryce Mertyne, Ann Macfee
James Martyne
Scotland Births and Baptisms, 1564-1950
 birth: 20 Feb 1781
residence: Kingarth, Buteshire, Scotland
parents: Bryce Martyne, Ann Mcfie
Janet Mertyne
Scotland Births and Baptisms, 1564-1950
 birth: 03 Mar 1775
residence: Kingarth, Buteshire, Scotland
parents: Bryce Mertyne, Ann Macfee
Margaret Mertyne
Scotland Births and Baptisms, 1564-1950
 birth: 25 Dec 1769
residence: Kingarth, Buteshire, Scotland
parents: Bryce Mertyne, Ann Mcfee
William Mertine
Scotland Births and Baptisms, 1564-1950
 birth: 08 Mar 1785
residence: Kingarth, Buteshire, Scotland
parents: Bryce Mertine, Ann Mcfee
Alexander Mertyne
Scotland Births and Baptisms, 1564-1950
 birth: 29 Oct 1778
residence: Kingarth, Buteshire, Scotland
parents: Bryce Mertyne, Ann Macfee
and there is this one - presume Nancy is another name for Ann
Bryce Martyne
Scotland Births and Baptisms, 1564-1950
 birth: 27 Dec 1782
residence: Kingarth, Buteshire, Scotland
parents: Bryce Martyne, Nancy Macfee
And two with Agnus
Alexander Martyne
Scotland Births and Baptisms, 1564-1950
 birth: 27 May 1773 — , Kingarth, Bute, Scotland
residence: Kingarth, Buteshire, Scotland
parents: Bryce Martyne, Agnus Macfee
 Nelly Martyne
 Scotland Births and Baptisms, 1564-1950
 birth: 27 May 1773 — , Kingarth, Bute, Scotland
residence: Kingarth, Buteshire, Scotland
parents: Bryce Martyne, Agnus Macfee
So I guess between us we are answering the question!
Thanks for your help
Gillian
Well done Gillian  :) That looks like a complete set for their children. Last birth in March 1785, could still fit with that possible death entry for Bryce Martin, if wife Ann was pregnant at the time of his death.
The reference for the marriage date of 1778. The person who posted the info on the above link does mention that the film qualitity is really poor and, by inference, really hard to read. Maybe marriage date was 1768 rather than 1778?
