I'm glad to hear that you found the grave you were looking for, all be it vandalised.
I was indeed very lucky as the one I was looking for is still in tact although the stone is lying down face up.
The sad fact is that this graveyard is indeed in one of the less admirible parts of Motherwell and being stuck out of sight of main road etc is the subject of vandals and hooligans etc.
I was chatting to the restorative justice people who are responsible for the cleaning up of this graveyard and the reopening the road from Mossend down and they tell me that they often had to abandon the site due to junkies or idiots using them as target practice from the trees up on the hills.
So please anyone who does go there beware.

I'm glad I seen this thread. I was planning a trip to Globe over the weekend after been given some Lair numbers for relatives/ancestors buried there.

Might wait until the other half or a couple of people can come with me then.

Thanks

Well I shall be returning over the summer -- why not wait for me if you cannnot get Other Half, etc.? I teach swimming in Edinburgh in the mornings during the summer break, so would be looking to get there just after lunch time.... Although mornings would probably be better before the giro monkeys awake from their substance-induced slumber to wreak havoc upon the unsuspecting genealogist...

Ian Goldie is the chargehand for all the cemeteries in that locale and is a brilliant chap -- if he does not have (say) a funeral at Airbles, he would be happy to join us by arrangement... or, if you want to go earlier, I can give you Ian's contact number?

All the Best!

It would be great to have someone there who knows the layout of the cemetery because I've got lair numbers, but I've never been.

Let me know when you are going and I'll try and go on the same day.

Hello Gerry.

Have just had a look at a post of yours, and am delighted to read that the Globe cemetery can be accessed from Mossend.

I have tried to locate it in the past from the Motherwell end , but if the weather was poorly, it does not make for easy access.

If I were to walk down Kirklee Road, how long a walk is it?

Many thanks.

I believe they stopped new lairs in the 1930's. A full list of all the interments in the Globe both private and common graves is available to view on a CD at the Motherwell Heritage Centre.

You don't mention what date period your mums side of the family lived in Dalziel or from what part. The Parish of Dalziel was vast and covered a lot of cemeteries.

If you do think they maybe in the Globe and are unable to visit the heritage centre send me a PM with the details and I will pop along and look for them for you.
