Julia LOWE (1877) of Chesterfield, Derbys.
« on: Wednesday 05 February 14 20:21 GMT (UK) »
I am quietly confident I have found the correct 'Julia LOWE' in online searches as the one born to parents George LOWE (1838-1889) and Elizabeth LOWE (later Boultbee, b.1845).

I find her on 1881 and 1891 census returns, but nothing after this.

Providing it is the correct person, I have a birth cert. showing her as mother to a relative, George LOWE (b. 03 Apr 1902, died as George Lowe CLARK, 07 Feb 1983) with no accompanying father.

Does anyone know...

1) Is this the correct Julia LOWE that mothered George LOWE?

2) If so, is it the Julia LOWE who went on to marry Charles CARTER in 1905?

3) What happened to her after the birth of George LOWE?

4) Who was George LOWE's father?

I am new to the forums, so if there is anything I have missed, please forgive me :)

Thanks for your time folks.

As I can't see Julia Lowe on the 1901 census under her maiden name I took a look at marriages and there is this one

Marriages Dec 1/4 1894
Julia Lowe   reg district Chesterfield  vol 7b page  1404
Now FreeBMD says that Clay Cross is included in Chesterfield reg district, but it also says that Clay Cross is included in the Shardlow reg district for 1905 marriage!

Hello.... Welcome to Rootschat!

From what you have said it looks like Julia married Samuel Smith - Derbyshire Registrars Marriage index give that the couple married at Chesterfield register Office in 1894.

The family are on the 1901 census in Church Row North Winfield - RG13 /piece 3242/ folio 100/ page 7
Julia is aged 23 born in Clay X (sic)

If you need the rest of the census details just say  ;)

Thanks for the replies...

Although I doubt the one mentioned by crisane is correct...

If the marriage in 1894 is anything to go by, it would make Julia only 16 when she got married, and also would ask the question why her son was born with the LOWE surname and no mention of a SMITH.

On George LOWE's birth cert. in 1902, Julia was listed as a General Domestic Servant, which doesn't sound like the role of a married woman.

Julia Lowe married Charles William Carter in 1905 at the Baptist Chapel at Sawley.

We are not allowed to post details re the 1911 census but that Julia was born 1882 Holloway, Derbyshire, so still not the correct Julia Lowe.

mmm.. yes, and there is evidence of a Julia Lowe born in Belper (Holloway district) in 1881 to back that up Dizzifish.

It's been a family mystery for years!

What's more is that a 1911 census I have shows George LOWE (Julia's son) living with his CLARK family as we know it (same siblings, correct age etc) with the surname SHAW!!

note. George LOWE's death cert shows his name as George Lowe CLARK

Sixteen was the age of consent then. Did Samuel die, or they parted ways and for some reason Julia used her maiden name on George's birth reg? She may have been trying to get support from the father or county?

Just a couple of thoughts.
