Looking for John William Hall born 1888
« on: Wednesday 19 March 14 16:37 GMT (UK) »
Hi All

I wonder if anyone who has access to any Derbyshire baptisms would be able to look up John William Hall, born first quarter 1888?

I have a date of birth of 20 January 1888 for him from a US Draft card, but the trouble is I have five candidates born first quarter 1888 to choose from so I don't want to send for all the certificates!

One J W Hall was born in the Derby registration district 1st quarter 1888 but I have no idea which towns/villages would be included in the Derby RD.  I realise it's a big ask, but any help would be much appreciated.

I know that JW Hall emigrated to the US in 1908 aged 20 but I haven't found him on a passenger list.  He married Mary Ackley, possibly in Pennsylvania in about 1911 - I have the family in later census in the US but I'm trying to trace his roots in the UK.

Thanks for looking!

Sandra

Is this the John W Hall on FIND A GRAVE ?

Burial: Evergreen Cemetery  Grand Blanc Genesee County Michigan.

http://www.rootschat.com/links/0yix/

Just wondering if its possible to find an obituary which may give parents or place of birth.

Genesee (Michigan) District library :- https://www.thegdl.org/index.php/contact-us/branches

The WW1 Draft does give a place of birth which I couldn't read - have you tried cropping that and putting  it on Deciphering & Recognition Help to see if someone can identify the place in Derbyshire where he was born  ???

Have you followed the US family forward to see if you can gain any other clues  ???

Sandra - you are a genuis!  I didn't find that draft card, it was the 2nd WW that I found but this one gives so much more information and is definitely my man

I wonder if Sunland means Sunderland?  Two of my possible JW Hall's were born in the Newcastle RD so it's possible!

Thank you so much for finding that.

Heywood, I think you've cracked it.

Two of John W's siblings were Mark and Isabella.  He named two of his children Mark and Isabella.  I know it's not conclusive proof but it's looking good!

thank you so much
