Illegible townland - Oughteragh parish, Leitrim
« on: Saturday 08 December 12 13:38 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for help in deciphering a townland name in Co Leitrim. The townland is in Oughteragh parish somewhere, and is for a child born to Mike Dolan and Bridget Magauran (bottom entry on attached scan). Any ideas?

Have you tried comparing the townland with the list of townlands in the parish on SeanRuad site (www.thecore.com/seanruad)?
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Yes I have, and can't see one that fits. Hoping someone with local knowledge may know.

What's the date for this baptism ?

The RC records for this parish only seem to go back to 1869, so presume the corresponding birth would be in civil records.

Is it one of these children ?

   Dolan / Magauran extracted births

This give place of birth as Ballinamore or in one case Aughlin. These are probably sub-districts and might help narrow down the search area..

Yes. It’s Hugh Dolan b 1871.  You are quite correct that the birth will be in the civil regn records. There’s 2 Hugh Dolan births in Bawnboy Regn District for 1871, and I was hoping to be able to identify the right townland without having to buy either or both certificates.

He seems to be registered in Ballinamore Registrars Districts - which covers  6 electoral districts - Ballinamore, Cloverhill, Garadice, Greglass, Oughteragh and Stralongford. These include about 130 townlands.

It looks to me like that place name starts with a 'D', followed by vowels and maybe n's or m's ?

Yes it's annoying. I feel I ought to be able to work it out. A sibling was born in Drumbibe but it can't be that.

about 25 townlands that I see in the district that start with D. Most have several ascenders or descenders, which based on the image I think rules them out.. these are the  left overs..

  Derrinivver
  Drumcroman
  Dromore

and maybe add to that Dunmany, Drumahira, and Drumarigna
