Devizes missing records or transcripts
« on: Monday 30 December 13 09:23 GMT (UK) »
Hello there....

a small problem has arisen>

Let me explain>>>>>>>
Hugh Wallis nominates >
Devizes Parish Registers
BAPTISMS 1570-1909 MARRIAGES 1570-1890 BURIALS 1570-1889
BAPTISMS 1616-1648 1714-1837
BAPTISMS 1780-1808 BURIALS 1780-1814

which is St Mary records as found on fs.o;;;;;;;

Hugh Wallis then suggests>
Devizes, St John the Baptist
MARRIAGES 1559-1837
BAPTISMS 1842-1848 MARRIAGES 1888-1895
MARRIAGES 1559-1837
MARRIAGES 1559-1750

and finally >
Devizes, St Mary the Virgin
BAPTISMS 1733-1740 1852-1873 MARRIAGES 1759-1850
BAPTISMS 1780-1808 BURIALS 1780-1818

Another source [History of Parish Registers] suggests...
THE Blessed Virgin Mary records apparently start in 1559  but the microfilms do not cover this scope (1559 - 1730 and the St John Baptist start in 1559 which of the latter was partially filmed by the mormons

Devizes, St Peter     no details known

Volume XI Phillimores
has
Devizes St John the Baptist 1559 - 1837     but this is only the marriages.

Herein lies the problem>    Where are the transcripts for burials and baptisms of St John the Baptist from 1559 to 1842 since it is  apparent that the mormons did not microfilm them.  Phillimore states in the opening text of 'marriages of St John the Baptist' that the entries for the baptisms and burials are intertwined with the marriages. However as much as the marriages are published by Phillimore
where are the transcripts for the rest?

The IGI or fs.o seems to cover St Mary Virgin but as things go the transcript interpretation is not wholly of the original,
so where is the transcript of the original done from either the films or the parish registers themselves.?

Lawd knows about St Peter Devizes and other secular records of the town so enlightenment is required for these as well.

So does anyone have a typed original copy of the St John p [or even St Mary Virgin] baptisms and burials from inception or do es anyone know where the Actual Parish registers for the church[es] are housed.....??????

PS   have looked on the fs.o sources section at the cat numbers and other surrounding material for the 24 X 16mm films.....

thank you

 :)

Transcriptions of Wiltshire parishes tend to be held by commercial companies - and very few are online! :(

Have you tried Wiltshire OPC?
http://www.wiltshire-opc.org.uk/

Even GenFair and The Genealogist don't mention Devizes PR's?!

Wiltshire OPC project has yet to access these records since the town is split into 3 very large parishes if you include St. James, Southbroom plus the smaller St. Peters.  St. Mary is now closed or so a photographer for the project has reported.  As we are unfunded and rely on our own pockets to purchase the microfiche to transcribe from this will be a costly project.  However the OPC for Devizes spends several months of the year in Devizes so may be able to visit the WSHC to transcribe at source

kgarrad,
thanks for that check up,   i was in fact hoping that one of the 1960s typed transcripts might have been lingering.....       as i did find one for a wiltshire parish in canada through the gen chat on fb......

just as an interest    i am currently writing a paper on the state of affairs regarding materials in an attempt to get some further transcriptions done accross the UK.....which i hope to publish for the next genealogy conferences,    which as you know is an up hill battle as we either have to do it ourselves or find locals prepared to undergo the work. Its a little hard when one is in the middle of the bush of Australia and get ready access to Swindon or I would be doing them all......

 :)

Wiltshire FHS have transcribed and published baptism & burial transcripts for all three parishes (St Mary, St John and Southbroom St James) - see http://www.wiltshirefhs.co.uk/index.php/registers?eprivacy=1 and select the link "Parish Register Transcripts & Other Publications".   WSFHS have also made them available via FindMyPast.

smudwhisk>

thanks for that info,         may have to look at disc of WFHS as option....

definetly  cant use the FindMyPast entries as i need the whole transcripts wholly and solely so we can look at all phonetics and notations ........

it is important the transcript is close to the original as part of the research includes the events made by a particular rector , as we are recreating his life story amongst the various genealogies of his kin and surrounding families....

thanks for the input
