Who was the Lord of the Manor?
« on: Friday 14 March 14 22:55 GMT (UK) »
Hi - my ancestors were agricultural labourers in the 1800's.

I was wondering if there is a way to find out who they worked for?  They were living and operating in the Chittoe, Bromham area of Wilts  (near Devizes).

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

it might give some info.

Hi Dragonlady

The census' for these parishes may have the manor house listed with the details you're after.

Hi again

There may have been farmers who owned 100's of acres and employed ag labs to work the land.

These can be found on the parish census written as such.

Ok thanks - I know in the mid 1800's one of the ancestors "Owned" or worked a couple of acres.  But not sure whose it was or what the terms were.

Gadget - your husband's family is from this area?  I just got back from doing a lightening trip to Devizes (and the bustling metropolis of Chittoe) and the WSHC but unfortunately, never made it to Bromham.
