Title: Divorce in the 1870s Bristol
Post by: Salty on Monday 05 March 12 18:19 GMT (UK)
Hoping someone can help with a divorce in Bristol

I have an Edwin Rudman marrying Charlotte Leigh in 1868 in Bedminster.

Then in 1878 he marries an Eliza Barber if it is the same man, not absolutely sure.  :-\

But am wondering if there was a record of him divorcing Charlotte prior to that.

Very odd circumstances as a Charlotte Leigh also got married in 1878 again!!!!!!!

Help please
Tom

Divorce in those days was usually for the rich - I wonder if she was underage when they married and the marriage was declared void???.  1871 census shows her as 18 - 3yrs after the marriage

This is the 1868 marriage

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/NX5S-LL9

and the 1878 showing birthyear 1854

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/NFBS-LVR

1881 census for Charles & Charlotte Spear show Charlotte as 28 but there are children shown as Spear born between 1873-1877 who are probably Rudman

Carole,

Thankyou for that confirmation and yes I have all the children, she seems to have been a real baby making machine.

I was really looking to see if anyone could find a divorce or annulment. She was born in Bedminster in 1852 and bapt was June 52 so just 16 at time of first marriage.

Thanks again
Tom
