I lost my Gran, Ann Wallace, Shand. 1906- 1924
« on: Wednesday 22 June 05 11:18 BST (UK) »
Hi all you good folk out there ;D
I have a missing Gran. ???
Can you help ???

Her name is Ann Wallace, Illegitimate. born Old Deer.
Her father [REPUTED] was James Wallace, tailor. apparently still alive in 1880,
Her mother was Barbara Findlay.now O'Brien, 1880.[I feel that O'Brien is an error it should Milne.]
Ann[27yrs]. married Charles Shand  [39yrs],4/12/1880 in Morrice buildings, Logierieve. Udny.

Both were working at Maryculter, as gardeners. before they married and in the 1881c.
they had George, early 1881.
They then moved up to Burnside of Braco in Cruden. to live with Charles's parents.
George Shand and Elizabeth Sangster.
1891c Burnside, of Braco crud en.
 Charles is 53!! Tarves  head.
Ann is 38,        Old Deer.
George is 10.   Maryculter
Charles A,  8    cruden
Hellen D,  5      cruden
William 1          cruden
George father 79, Logie buchan.
Elizabeth mother 75 Udny.
George dies Feb 1897. Charles dies April 1897, Elizabeth died 1899.
Poor Ann, is alone with William in the 1901c, she is 48yrs , and William is 11yrs, living at 10 main rd, Cruden.
This is the last I can find of her.
when Helen duncan shand marries Andrew Connon, 2/2/1906, she says her father was deceased.
and Annie Shand,, M.S.    Wallace.
Presuming she was still alive.[note that, they sometimes don't mention if they marry again]...
Helen died 7/9/1924, and Ann was deceased.
so, sometime between 1906 and 1924 she died. :-
I have tried all sorts of things, and can't find her death.
I traced the other children and they don't seem to marry.
2 of the boys are gardeners at  Slains Castle.
so does anyone have any suggestions.
Ann did have an illegitimate child, called Ann Wallace. born 1874.
she was adopted by Alexander Sangster and Bathia Clark, of Morrice Buildings Undy.
[so that is 1 reason Ann and Charles married there].
Ann Married Alexander Lawrie 1897, but Ann died just after the census.

Hi Kenjo,

Was William one of the sons working as a gardener @ Slains ?

and

Did Helen Duncan Connon have any children, where perhaps Ann was a witness at their christening ?

Kenjo, probably a stupid question, but did you find evidence that Barbara Findlay is Ann's mother?  Marriage certificates are prone to mistakes - made by registrars copying details wrongly.  Dorothy

OK ysabeau,
These are the children that I know about.
William , Nanny, Mary, Daisy 1919, Rosie 1923, Jeanie 1924.
all cruden.

back to Ann Wallace/Shands boys in the 1901c.
{I am sorry i jumped in too fast}
George 20 yrs in Ellon is a Shoemaker, born Maryculter.
Charles A 18yrs in Udny Castle, Gardeners ? Gardeners Apprentice. born Cruden.
The other Gardener that was in Slains Castle was Robert Shand who was these boys 1st cousin.
I haven't found any marriage or deaths of these boys, not to say there isn't but just that I chose not to go over board.
and buy every certificate in site.

hi  dkmcad,
No I don't really have any evidence.
I only know that there is no Barbara O'Brien, other that one in Sutherland, and I feel she is highly unlikely.
I do have this entry in the 1941c.
[I lost my copy]!..
anyway it was a Barbara findlay 15yrs.
with mum Mary, and siblings. in New or Old Deer.
Igi have a christening with James Findlay and Mary Cooper.as the parents. she is the most likely.
but I feel she marries a Milne.......
[ I am sorry for being very vague, but I haven't looked at this for some years and obviously, have been very slack at my note taking.

Don't shout Kenjo, didn't cost me anything, had credits left on SP!!!!!!

Tried all sorts of combinations but didn't come up with anything.
Sorry!  Next time I go to NRH, which probably won't be until the Autumn, will certainly have a scout around for Ann's death.
Meantime, maybe someone can come up with something.

Saw Barbara Findlay's marriage to William Milne and her children,  who appear to be still there in January 1861.  The 1861 census should be online, well..... ??  You might find a wee Ann W. in Old Deer either with mother or grandparents.
