John Marks...Orkney to Cornwall
« on: Wednesday 26 October 11 10:10 BST (UK) »
I have recently discovered that an ancestor of mine, John Marks, was according to the English 1841/1851 censuses  born in Newcastle Scotland. He married twice (to Cornish women) and was a copper miner and later a sexton. He was born around 1802. I would like to find out more information on my (unexpected) Scottish relative, does anyone have any advice as to my next step. I have had a brief look at the Scottish censuses of 1841/1851 but the name Marks does not feature, apart from a Daniel Marks who appears to be connected with the prison; and he was born in Ireland!

Regards

do you have his marriage certificate to Alice to confirm father's name & occupation? 1841 census has a John & Elizabeth Marks in Camborne who are of an age to be the parents of your John.

Isnt Newcastle in Northumberland.

Google Maps confirms 2 Newcastle's in Orkney?

1851 census confirms Scotland as birthplace.
1861 census confirms Newcastle, Scotland as birthplace.

Mind you, to a Cornish enumerator, Newcastle Upon Tyne probably IS in Scotland?!?! ;D

Many years ago, I overheard the following discussion between 2 gentlemen, in a Cornish Pub:

"Where you going Saturday?"
"Going to England - shopping"

He was going to Plymouth!! :D

Thank you Osprey; I have applied for the marriage certificate of John and Alice; she was John's second wife, therefore not my direct ancestor but hopefully the info. will help. The 1841 census shows John and his 6 children living in Camborne. His first wife Catharine having died in 1839. However the census shows John's place of birth as Cornwall.  Maybe the enumerator was just a little heavy handed with his ditto's!

In reply to KGarrad and Isobelruss.......yes I did check on google for the scottish Newcastle! Oddly enough I also have relatives who went from Tynemouth to Cornwall. But that's another story!!!
