Lancashire Places
« on: Wednesday 06 June 07 19:28 BST (UK) »
I'm sorry but these Lancashire place names are getting me all confused - I have tried looking at maps but some don't even show up.  I am trying to determine if the places are very close or whether I might have 2 or 3 identical families.

I have William Longworth born abt 1801/2  1851 census has his beirth place as halsham or halshaw Moor
wife Mary born abt same time is from Liverpool
daughter ann same as her dad but born abt 1829
daughter Mary born abt 1832  Pendleton
son William born abt 1842 radcliffe

they are living at Hand or Stand lane Pilkington

1861 has the family in Whitworth

William age 59  is now down as being from Farnham
Mary  age 59  Liverpool
son William age 19  the birth place looks like raton

I am sure that this is the right family however as  the daughter mary married James barlow in 1851 and one of their sons Charles is living with  william  and Mary on this census

on a later census the daughter Mary gives her birth place as Clifton and another time Pendleton

I have no idea how to determine which william would be the right one as from the Lancashire online Parish clerk I can tell there must be at least one other William and mary Longworth born same time in same area

I would appreciate someone giving me a better idea on the locations of these places and also help in deducing which birth reference would be the correct one for the som william as he is the only child in certificate time that would give me mothers maiden name

Can anyone help

Hi,

Halshaw moor was around Farnworth.  Perhaps the Farnham from the 1861 should have been Farnworth.

Halshaw Moor was part of Farnworth (see e.g. http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/LAN/FarnworthD/)

Pilkington is/was part of Prestwich (http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/LAN/Pilkington/)

Pendleton is a fair distance to the north near Clitheroe: I suspect they mean Pendlebury.

See this route on  google maps

Whitworth is miles away on the other side of the Pennines near Bishop Auckland, but they look like the same family.  William's a coal miner on both.  Farnham is likely a slip for Farnworth.  Not sure how Radcliffe becomes Raton, but at least the first two letters are the same!

Hi,

Forgot to mention that the Registration Office for a Radcliffe birth would have been BURY.

Snap Mo.

There is on FreeBMD a birth registration for William Longworth, March Q 1842 Bury Vol 21 Page 317.

There's a Whitworth in Lancashire to the north of Rochdale (zoom out on your google). And could Raton be Royton, near Oldham in Lancs?
Cheers,
Barbara

Pendleton is a fair distance to the north near Clitheroe: I suspect they mean Pendlebury.

Pendleton is also an area of Salford/Manchester.

If it were the Lancashire Whitworth, it would mean ancestry have moved it to County Durham  ;)

Not impossible, I suppose, though most of the neighbours are from Durham, Yorkshire and Northumberland.

I presume this is the 1861 census you're talking about, pigginnut?  RG9; Piece: 3710; Folio: 79; Page: 29; GSU roll: 543176.

I've quickly tried to map the census pages onto google maps to see if the streets are next to each other, but can't do it particularly well for either the Co. Durham Whitworth or the Rochdale Whitworth.  But I've only spent a couple of minutes.

Might be worth asking on the Durham Board?

Oh, and well done Sheila.  I thought it rang a vague bell, but was swayed by the presence of Pendlebury right in the search area, and the fact that I often pass through Pendleton in the Ribble Valley on the way to one of my favourite pub-restaurants.
