Hi,

Thank you all for your help. I think this Ellen Pardon if she was a Martin and married a Pardon could have been Edwin's sister instead. John Martin 1880 was a master shoe maker on the marriage certificate. Edwin was 28 and Florence was 26. I have been told by family Florence was a pharmacist and she had a sister. But they could have got confused about names. My uncle told me Grandad Edwin was a stocker in the Navy. What I have found is he went into the Navy at 19 and served till 1908 registered again in 1915, discharge wales (if this is true)

I hope this helps.

Thanks,

Louise

so -with all that info -  Ellen who married aged 18 in 1882 to Thomas Pardon - and was 17 in 1881 census is definitely Edwin John Martins sister....at last ...lol
so that is one query sorted
now for Florence Flowers ? aged 26 at marriage in 1911 - so born 1884 - 1885( does that rule out the Hammersmith birth posted earlier? )....supposedly in London - did she have a middle name ?...if not - there are only 2 in that period - Birmingham and Gloucester ??
the most likely looking is Florence Elizabeth Flowers b dec qtr 1885 Dartford  2a 448
Louise
I am a little confused regarding the Sailor at marriage and Labourer 6 months later at the first born baptism - Edwin John Martin - what was his occupation on 1911 census ???...
I suppose - if he was a Sailor - he sailed into London and Florence came to his abode to marry ?
but why would he say on 6th feb 1912 he was a Labourer -

Hi Garstonite,

Louise says he joined up at 19 and was a stoker. He left in 1908 and rejoined later.
This would also perhaps account for his absence in 1901.

Heywood

put me wise Heywood - I am a little confused
Louise states - What I have found is he went into the Navy at 19 and served till 1908 registered again in 1915,
so from 1908 - 1915 he is not in the Navy ?   so how is he a sailor in 1911 on his marriage cert?
if he was in the Merchant Navy he would be a Mariner on his marriage Cert
in Liverpool - a Sailor is Royal Navy - a Mariner is Merchant Navy ...or is this just a Liverpool terminology ? ...if so - I have never seen a Sailor on a marriage cert when someone was in Merchant Navy ....it is Mariner ....and a Captain is a Master Mariner ...or am I ignorant ?...lol

I'm confused too.
I can't see a reference to his occupation on marriage - just his father's.
If there was a conflict in the family about him being at sea, then he and Florence would have met pre-1908.
It may be that it is a family story with some truth but not all  - as happens so often  :)

Louise, do you know where and when Florence died? Her death certificate might have her birthday on it and that might make it easier to find a birth record for her.
