Boyce, Macosquin
« on: Tuesday 03 May 11 23:34 BST (UK) »
Hi

I'm trying to trace my family roots. My Great Grandfather John Arthur Boyce, born 1873, lived in Macosquin but I do not have a date of death. He was married to Sarah Boyce and had 13 children one being my grandad John, born 1905, Macosquin, County Londonderry. His brothers & sisters were Robert, James, William, Samuel, Cochrane, Edward, Neil, Matty, Nancy, Nellie, Violet and Sissy........ I've found it very difficult to gather information and any help would be appreciated.

Regards

Pat Boyce

welcome to Rootschat. Here's the Boyce family in 1911 census which will give you some information:
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Londonderry/Somerset/Bushtown/587780
They most likely belong to the Parish (Church of Ireland) Church in Macosquin- St. Mary's Camus-Juxta Bann.

Here's John and Sarah in 1901 census listed with her parents not far from Bushtown-

Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

The first complete census for all Ireland is 1901- only small fragments of earlier ones survive for a few areas. There is an 1831 census for Co,Londonderry but it only shows head of household, number of males and females, number of male and female servants, number of each religion (Church of Ireland, R.C., Presbyterian, other).
Since the Boyce family were labourers and you haven't gone that far back to know names of earlier ancestors at this stage it won't be much use to you.

1900 marriage record of John and Sarah. I tried some of the family names and got a hit for James Boyce as John's father.

Using James as the father's names I found two John's ...

Civil Birth Boyce John Arthur 1873 Co. Derry
Church Baptism Boyce John 1876 Co. Derry

John b.1873 has a mother named Nancy McIntyre ...the name of his 2nd daughter. He was baptised in the parish of Aghadowey

It was common at the time to name the 1st son and daughter after the father's parents...the 2nd son and daughter after the mother's parents. In this case the 1st child was named after her mother...maybe the 2nd child was named after her paternal grandmother.

Here are James and Nancy in the 1901 census...Letterloan is close to Macosquin
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Londonderry/Letterloan/Cashel/1517653/

The John b.1876 has a mother named Mary Ann

This looks like them in the 1901 census...
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Londonderry/Lower_Liberties/Shortallon/1538542/

John's age is given as 21...which is a few years out (not uncommon, though the mistake is usually in someone older...but it depends who gave the information We know he can't be your John who's living with his in-laws in 1901.

The familysearch site has a record of a marriage of
James Boyce  to Nancy Mc Intyre
12 Nov 1868 in Coleraine, Londonderry, Ireland
Groom's Father's name   Mathew Boyce
Bride's Father's name  William Mc Intyre

Mary 1869 daughter of James Boyce and ANN Mc Intyre (Familysearch record 27 Jun 1869)
Margarert 1871 daughter of James Boyce and ANN Mc Intyre (FS 26 Aug 1871)
John Arthur 1873 son of James Boyce  and Nancy Mc Intyre (FS 26 Jun 1873)
Jane  1875  daughter of James Boyce  and Nancy Mc Intyre
James 1876 son of James Boyce  and NAN Mc Intyre (FS 02 Dec 1876)
Samuel 1879 son of  James Boyce  and Nancy Mc Intyre
Letitia 1881 daughter of James Boyce  and Nancy Mc Intyre
Matthew 1885 son  of James Boyce  and Nancy Mc Intyre

Here are James and Ann (Nancy) living in Coleraine in 1911
According to this they had 12 children...11 living
In the 1901 census there are Martha,Thomas and Robert whom I haven't found...that would account for 11
O'Kane, O'Mullan: Garvagh Derry
Bowe: Currabaha ,Waterford
McManus: Aghagallon ,Antrim
McGowan: Drumshambo, Leitrim
