Baptisms - Steeple Claydon

Hi,

If anyone has got access to Steeple Claydon baptism records I would be very grateful if they would check and tell me the surnames of any Marys born between 1790 and 1796. Sorry that it is such a common name but as it's a smallish village I'm hoping there won't be too many.

Sorry no one seems eager to help, Anna. The records you're looking for are not published, so require a visit to Aylesbury. Had your request come up three weeks sooner I could have looked these up for you myself, as I was actually working on the Steeple Claydon registers at the start of the month, but I'm afraid I won't be back in Aylesbury for 2-3 months. If it helps you move on, the Society will carry out a database search for you for a small fee:

Thanks for the advice Graham. I have used the society database for various searches before but wasn't sure that this would be possible without actually having a surname. I will definitely look into it.

Hi Anna

Did you get anywhere with this? I was in Aylesbury yesterday and had some time to spare, and have come up with the list below. I'm sure you're aware that the Steeple Claydon registers are badly burned, and otherwise damaged by heat. They're not an easy read even for this late date. Please take the below as a 'first draft' rather than a final result, as I'd make one or more return visits to re-read and check when documents are in the condition these are. Hi Graham,

You are so kind to look these up for me, thank you. It's funny as I've been thinking about these baptisms all weekend and was so surprised to find your reply a couple of minutes ago. I had no idea that the Steeple Claydon registers had been damaged by fire - I have a copy of the marriage register and all seemed well with that, so just assumed it was all intact. Might explain why a few burials appear to be missing though.

There are a lot more Marys born than I imagined there would be - I think my Mary is the Spiers entry in 1795 but I was glad to see no Mary Halls were baptised there as my Mary's son used Hall as a middle name for one of his children and it rather threw a spanner in the works as the name didn't seem to belong to his wife's family either. Anyway, once again thanks for your help, it really is much appreciated (big smile on my face now)!!

Yes, the registers are in a very poor state. The, or one of, the post 1837 marriage registers is virtually ash, and has been reconstructed as a transcript. The incumbent had a fire near the turn of the 19th/20th centuries.
