help with searching on Scotland's People
« on: Wednesday 13 August 14 12:43 BST (UK) »
Hi all

Need help with optimising a birth search but the people concerned are still alive.

With the E&W GRO indexes you can search with a surname and mothers maiden surname to narrow down the entries and then cherry pick the entries you require.

I can't see how to do this with SP.

I have potential births after 1920 in the Glasgow area with a lot of entries.

I can do the free search  and see there are over 100 entries but get offered the 1st page of results to view for a credit.

I haven't done this yet, but if I then pay the credit and see the results, will I then be able to see the mothers maiden surname to find out who I'm looking for?

Don't want to buy credits and find they all disappear as I stumble around willy-nilly.

No, the results page won't contain the mother's maiden name. You have to buy the certificate to find it. What I try to do is narrow the search field to the area where I believe the family lived.

If a researcher goes to the SP centre in Edinburgh and does research there can they see the surnames?

If you look at 8.1 , it looks like mother's maiden name is available on the birth index from 1929 onwards.

Quote
A cross check search using the married and maiden surnames was already available
at the ScotlandsPeople Centre in Edinburgh and that such a cross-check search is a
very powerful tool.

Security is given as the reason for not providing the maiden name online.

In answer to your question about a researcher visiting Register House (or the Genealogy Centre) in Glasgow being able to see the mother's maiden name ......

Yes. The whole certificate can be viewed and details transcribed but the image cannot be copied.

I can't quite remember how recent the dates go up to - possibly around a year?

Try going into Advanced search and putting the motherīs maiden name into the text field that comes up there. It may help to narrow the options a little.

I was searching (in Inverness Archive Centre :) ) last year and could see records within the last 6 months :o. I think the indexes were more recent still (~3 months?) but I seem to remember seeing an index entry where the certificate itself didn't show.

I can give you the name of a researcher in Edinburgh who is doing the same thing for me - looking at bmd certificates at NRS which can evidently be done for free, after an initial admission charge.
She seems very efficient - I got her to get copies of some Sasines when the NRS was on a 40 days + reply time. She was extremely quick and her costs were very reasonable - it cost me less probably than going through NRS research department.
Let me know and I'll PM you.
