The problem for Maggie (and Evelina too) is that they are both working off the line of a John Mc(C)Lure who married a Sarah Collins and then went on to remarry a Mary McMillan after Sarah Collins' death.

David McLure born c. 1839, son of John and Sarah (Collins) is Evelina's line.

Alexander McLure born c. 1836, son of John and Sarah (Collins) is Maggie's line.

~ and therein lies the problem with the info we have...I might though be missing some obvious links here!

Wow - I certainly have lots to look at and figure out. Thanks to both of you for your help! I will let you know how it goes. I am going to order some birth certificates to cross references above info and what I have already gathered.

it's funny because I always thought my dad's side was Irish. Doing this search I learned his family had only been in Ireland a couple of years when he was born, and that they were from Cumberland. And his mom's family is the McClure's. So I started searching Belfast, then Cumberland and now Scotland! My head is spinning!

It does go dizzy sometimes  ::)

You can only work back stage at a time, verifying details as you go.

From what you said earlier:

Hi! I have just started my family tree but have a McClure branch I am working on from my dad's side. I am originally from Manchester, UK, and dad's side of family has McClure's.

So far I have:
Hugh McClure, born 1776, Kirkowan, Wigtonshire
Wife, Alicia, born 1772  - town?
Son, John, Born in 1817, Ayr
His son, Alexander, born 1836, Kirkmichael, Ayrshire
On 1851 census John is shown as widower with son Alexander 15, David 12, and John age 6. And they are all listed as born in Ayr - this throwing me off, not sure if this is a different branch?
Alexander's son, James born 1860
James's daughter, Lavinia, born 1880 - she was my grandmother

This is what you have to work with and back  ;)

Your Alexander McClure married Helen Fraser in 1859? https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XT1Z-35M

Their son James that you have mentioned was born in 1860? https://familysearch.org
/pal:/MM9.1.1/FQBH-GM9

A daughter Sarah in 1862 https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FQHN-8CM

Did they move away from Scotland after this year?

The one person I am struggling to find anything at all on so far for you is Lavinia, your grandmother  :-\ Can we discuss her dates and futher details?

This looks to be James at home still with parents on the 1881 census:

Alexander McLure 45 Traveller Serving Machiner b. Kirkmichael, Ayrshire
Hellen McLure 46 b. Gartsherrie
James McLure 20 coal miner b. Gartsherrie
Address: Colt Ter Clellands Buildings, Coatbridge, Old Monkland

Don't think Alexander had more children other than James and Sarah. Sarah, aged 8, shows in the household with parents and James in 1871 at North Square 210, Old Monkland.

And then 1891, I wondered if this was son James married to an Elizabeth. However, no sign of a Lavinia there  :-\ :

James McLure 30 coal miner b. Coatbridge
Elizabeth McLure 26 b. Shettleston, Lanarkshire
Sarah McLure 5
Helen McLure 3
Elizabeth McLure 1
Address: 11 High Sunnyside, Coatbridge

Still no sign of a Lavinia showing for James and Elizabeth in 1901:

James Mclure 40 coal miner
Lizzie Mclure 36
Sarah Mclure 11
Lizzie Mclure 11
Annie Mclure 7
Agnes Mclure 5
Janet Mclure 3
Christina Mclure 1
Address: 11 High Sunnyside, Coatbridge

There is no obvious birth entry showing either on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

Hi USAmaggie and MonicaL

Sorry not been on for a while, trying to catch up with this posting.  Alexander c 1836 Kirkmichael died 1903 Airdrie and Helen fraser born 3/5/1834 Gartsherrie died 1887 Old Monklamd only had the 2 children I could find James Fraser McClure and Sarah McClure. James 1860-1942 and Sarah 1862 to 1921.  James did indeed marry Elizabeth Henderson and they had at least10 children, 7 of whom died i the USA, one in Glasgow and the other 2 in Coatbridge.
