An old photo of Mouswald - circa 1904
« on: Tuesday 22 December 09 23:11 GMT (UK) »
Hello everyone,

This photo was published in a souvenir book of Dumfriesshire, circa 1904.

Underneath this photo is printed:

'Mouswald Village, 7 miles S.E. of Dumfries, near the old Dumfries and Annan Road (made in 1769-70), and close to Mouswald Church (built 1816 on the site of the former Church, said to be dedicated to St. Peter)  It is a rare specimen of the old-fashioned Border village of thatched houses.
Originally the property of the Marquis of Queensbury, it now belongs to Major Carruthers of Dormont.'

I think its a splendid picture of the past, I don't suppose it looks anything like it now?

Regards

Thanks so much for posting this photo. Interesting too to read the date that Mouswald Church was built. This building is now for sale and the date noted for its construction is about 1800.

Cheers

I have to admit that I had some concerns about my Dickson/Creighton ancestors who are buried in the cemetery at Mouswald Church. And from the information regarding the photo you attached, I now know that at least one of them was living in Mouswald when the new church would have been built in 1816.

But earlier today I read a post written 30 March 2011 (search Dickson and Johnstonebridge Church) and you'll see that the new owners of that church (who were planning to make it into a family home) were taking good care of the cemetery grounds.

We can only hope the same thing happens for Mouswald and Cummertrees.

Cheers
Mumfy

Hello again Mumfy,

I know that from the selling detail of Cummertrees church, that the grounds and mausoleum of the 'Douglas of Kinmount family' are owned separately from the church by Dumfries & Galloway Council.
