Margaret McLellan nee.Clegg
« on: Sunday 23 February 14 15:02 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,

I have been having difficulty in finding my ancestor's death. Her name was Margaret Clegg, she married James McLellan. Her last mention is on her daughter; Jane McLellan's birth certificate in 1855 in Greenock, Renfrewshire, Scotland and tells us that she was 30 when she had Jane and that she was been in Troon, Ayrshire. I haven't been able to find in the 1861 or 1871 censuses, and I know from Jane's marriage certificate in 1872 that Margaret was deceased by now. Another interesting point is Margaret's maiden surname on Jane's marriage cert is Cleghorn not Clegg. Can anyone help?

Thanks

Darren

Have you found father and daughter in 1861/1871 to see if he was a widower?  She may have died shortly after daughters birth.

There's a Margaret Cleghorn born 27 June 1825 Neilston Renfrew Scotland which would tie in with being 30 when daughter was born in 1855.
Parents Andrew Cleghorn Susan Duff.

Guess we need to find the marriage to James to see what name she married under - do you have that or know when they married?

The 1841 census shows a Margerat Clegg living in Dundonald, Ayrshire b 1826 with the others in the household William 45, Jean 45, Jeane 13, James 9, Hugh 7 and Thomas 3 mo. It would appear that Troon was in the parish of Dundonald.

This entry here for 1851 fits well with what is being discussed:

James Mclellan 28 Coach Driver b. Ayr, Ayrshire
Margaret Mclellan 28 b. Troon, Ayrshire
Thomas Mclellan 10 https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XTVF-STY
James Mclellan 6 b. Troon, Ayrshire

Address: 18 East Quay Lane, Greenock

William, maybe the 3mnth old Thomas you found in 1841 is actually the Thomas born 8 Mar 1841 (1841 census date was 6 June).

Could well be Monica. James Maccelland also comes up on Family Search b 4 Sept 1845 and baptized 10 Sept 1846 Dundonald to the same couple as Thomas. There is also a marriage in Dundonald 3 Sept 1846 between a Margaret Clegg and James Maccallum. I wonder if the original OPR of this marriage might be worth looking at.
