James Hodge/ Janet Paton, Slamannan
« on: Friday 17 October 14 22:09 BST (UK) »
In the 1861 census, James Hodge 66, carpenter, is at Crossroads Slamannan with his wife, Janet (Paton) Hodge  65, his daughter Margaret 37, John Main 7 (grandson), and Alexander Law 1 (grandson).
John Main’s parents were Thomas Main/ Jane Hodge (from the marriage record). John Main married Elizabeth Smellie 1875, Shotts. I have tried unsuccessfully, to find the parents of Thomas Main. Any help would be appreciated.

John Main’s parents were Thomas Main/ Jane Hodge (from the marriage record).

Have you checked the OPR's for a marriage between Thomas & Jane or for John Main's birth.  Although pre-1855 it may give some additional info

Have you checked the 1861 for Thomas Main & Jane to find his birthyear/birthplace?  If he died after 1855 his parents names will be on his death cert

Where is John in 1871?

Pure guesswork, but a tree on ancestry has Jane as Janet Hodge working as servant on farm of John Main at time of 1851 census (no Thomas listed).  In 1841 census John Main has (presumably) son Thomas aged 8. I'd speculate this is Thomas who married Jane / Janet. Person I'd guess to be farmer John's wife on 1841 census is named Jane.

Many thanks for the suggestions.
Further research revealed the following:
I was not able to find a marriage record for Thomas Main/ Jane (Janet) Hodge in OPRs.
I think Thomas was deceased in 1861 as John was living with his grandparents.
In the 1871 census, I found a John Main 21, joiner, boarder, Slamannan; living with Catherine Shanks 45; Jan Shanks 19; Ella Stewart 16. I’m not sure if that is the John I am researching.
In the 1841 census, the Thomas Main at Loanend was the son of John Main/ Jane or Jean Bell. This Thomas married Margaret Downs 1864.
