McChesney immigration to NZ
« on: Saturday 27 September 14 06:19 BST (UK) »
Hi all,
I was wondering if there was an easy way of finding when my McChesney relatives first arrived in NZ. James McChesney and his wife Eliza came somewhere between 1872 and 1875 with their son (my great great grandfather) Joseph. They came from Ireland, and settled in Marton NZ but I can't find an immigration record or ship list that has them listed.
Anyone able to help please?
Thanks
Sherry

Hi Sherry,
There is an article in the Cyclopedia of NZ with your relative in it together with a photo. This would have been written by James himself.

I googled the name and place as Marton, and several hits, one of which named several children.

Do you have any information on the NZ family at all?

Wow! That is great - yes lots of info on the family here. They had around 14 children, although I think a few of the first ones didn't survive. Joseph, one of the first sons, was my ggrandfather.
I just googled as you suggested - that is brilliant! What a great write-up!
Thank you so much for your help.

Hi Sherry

Are you familiar with the NZ paperspast site to look at old newspapers that have been digitalized, There are some McChesney articles in the Manawatu region, in the Wanganui Chronicle.

Do you have a James Wilson McChesney in your tree?

Hi all,
No I wasn't aware of any of those sites - that Cyclopedia is excellent. Yes Crowsfeet, there is a James Wilson - he was one of the children of the first James who came to NZ.
Thanks for the tip minnihaha, and will go and have a look at those papers.
Sherry

Hi folks,
The information that I have is that Joseph McChesney and Elizabeth McDowell sailed in 1875 on the Rodney. This information comes from research done by Margery Rankin of Northern Ireland.  She was researching her husband's family, the Wilsons. Joseph McChesney's mother was Jennet Wilson, daughter of James Wilson of Drumadarragh and Elizabeth Wilson of Rashee. I have information on the Wilsons in Rashee back to the late 1600's if you're interested.

Hi Anita, and welcome. :)

Hi Anita,
Very disappointed that I didn't write your email down this morning when I first looked at your post.
I would love to see what information you have re the Wilsons.
Perhaps you can do as "Spades" suggested, and then you can PM me your email again?
I don't find RootsChat overly easy to use, so hope we can manage to connect somehow.
Thanks
Sherry
