John WHITEHEAD: Born Bloomsbury, London, 1826
« on: Friday 24 October 14 17:07 BST (UK) »
Hello,

Possibly someone may be able to help.

John WHITEHEAD was born in Bloomsbury, London, in 1826, and whose mother, Mary, died in 1839 in Bloomsbury.  He arrived in Auckland aboard the "St.George" on 25/11/1842 as a FREE IMMIGRANT from Parkhurst Prison, that is, he was allowed unfettered parole to travel throughout the Colony only without check until his servitude was complete in August 1848.  It is thought by this time he was living in Wellington.  That is effectively the extent of my knowledge.

He should not be confused with John WHITEHEAD, a serving soldier with the 70th Regiment of Foot, who died in February 1864.

My apologies for the scant amount of detail......it might help that he had a brother Stephen, born in 1828, who emigrated to NSW and living in Sydney in 1853.

For the moment,

BAC3

Have you read this: Doesn't mention his name but it does describe what his life would have been like

It appears he was only 18 in 1842

John Whitehead, charged with larceny aged 14 (wow that is tough)

Here is his court case from "The Old Bailey" aka central criminal court, the dates match up:

He could be tricky to find, there appears to be no NZbdm for him

Thank you nz2014........although the age is slightly different, it is an excellent "lead" to investigate.

Have you checked this journal article for a source?

Thank you for offering suggestions........I am very grateful.

However, it is partly my fault in not specifying that I was concentrating purely on his whereabouts after arriving in Auckland and have therefore put you to a lot of unnecessary efforts.
