Possible Oxfordshire Marriage?
« on: Wednesday 20 August 14 15:47 BST (UK) »
I've been looking for the marriage of my 8xgrandfather George Russell to a Susannah circa 1650-8 (first known child baptised Hughenden, Bucks 1658) for years now.

I think I've pretty much exhausted Bucks and Berks. Could someone with access to the Oxfordshire Marriage Index please check to see if they strayed over the county border to get married?

Thanks.

Jill

Hi Jill,

Just had a look on the Marriage Index CD - sorry, can't see anything likely.  I tried all the spelling variations I could think of for George's surname too.

It's worth bearing in mind that 1650-8 was the Commonwealth period when there were no church marriages, only civil ones conducted by a Justice of the Peace.  While some were entered in the local parish church registers, most were not so chances are, unfortunately, you are unlikely to be able to find the marriage.  We've the same problem with some direct ancestor's marriage. :-\

I have a lot of missing marriages from that period too.

Despite that dastardly Cromwell chap, I always live in hope of finding them!!

Thanks
Jill
