Blackpool Smiths
« on: Wednesday 03 September 14 23:32 BST (UK) »
All Blackpool unless stated

My grandad was Albert Victor Smith (1898 - 1986), and I've got his parents as William Henry Smith (b1866) and Elizabeth Ellenor Johnson (b1866 Carlilse) but spelling of second and third names under debate.  They definitaly had the children to fit in with what I know.

But the marriage details I've found for Elizabeth say -

Marriage: 27 Jul 1887 St John the Evangelist, Blackpool, Lancashire, England
William Smith - 21 Boatman Bachelor of Blackpool
Elizabeth Eleanor Johnson - 20 Spinster of Blackpool
Groom's Father: John Smith, Boatman
Bride's Father: John Johnson, Blacksmith
Witness: James Cliff Schofield; Elizabeth Ann Spate
Married by Certificate by: Norman Stuart Jeffrey, Vicar
Register: Marriages 1883 - 1892, Page 123, Entry 246
Source: LDS Film 1526144

Whereas Williams father I have found listed as William Winter Smith, married to Ellen

The occupation fits so is it likely that it is the same person or am I completely on the wrong track?

This could be William's baptism

Baptism: 18 May 1866 St John the Evangelist, Blackpool, Lancashire, England
William Smith - [Child] of John Smith & Elizabeth
     Abode: Blackpool
     Occupation: Labourer

Where did the information that William was the son of William Winter Smith come from?

I've found the baptisms with Winter as the father's name

Baptism: 11 Mar 1866 St John the Evangelist, Blackpool, Lancashire, England
William Henry Smith - [Child] of Winter Smith & Ellen
     Abode: Blackpool
     Occupation: Shoemaker

The above child must die as they then have

Baptism: 15 Sep 1867 St John the Evangelist, Blackpool, Lancashire, England
William Henry Smith - [Child] of William Winter Smith & Ellen
     Abode: Blackpool
     Occupation: Boot and Shoe Maker

I don't think this is your William as he is William Henry and yours marries as just William.

This is John Smith's marriage

Marriage: 6 Jan 1864 St John the Evangelist, Blackpool, Lancashire, England
John Smith - full, Labourer, Bachelor, Blackpool
Elizabeth Fish - (X), full, Spinster, Blackpool
     Groom's Father: Peter Smith, Labourer
     Bride's Father: William Fish, Shoemaker
     Witness: George Fisher; Robert Butcher

This ties in with a birth registration in 1866 shown on www.lancashirebmd.org.uk of a William Smith mother's maiden name Fish.

The same site also shows the 2 birth registrations of William Henry (mother's maiden name Cardwell) in 1866 and 1867. Sadly both those William Henry's appear to have died young one 9n 1866 and one in 1869.

Brilliant thank you; I did wonder if there been more than one child with the same name.  I will read properly later and probably post again when I'm on the full size monitor rather than the net book!

We have got Cardwells somewhere in the line, probably through the Smiths - Dale Cardwell who died a few years ago was a cousin something removed.

I did wonder why there were two baptisms with the same name but I did say to my husband last night that they could have had another child and just used the same name

There must have been two Elizabeths and I just assumed it was William Winter, as that was the name for the son - I'm not very experienced at this yet!

Could this be Elizabeth?

Baptism: 26 Jun 1842 St John the Evangelist, Blackpool, Lancashire, England
Elizabeth Kirkham - [Child] of Reputed Father Lawrence Fish & Jane Kirkham
    Abode: Blackpool
    Occupation: Spinster
    Baptised by: W. Thornber
    Register: Baptisms 1821 - 1853, Page 55, Entry 435
    Source: LDS Film 1526143

She would have been 24 ish when William was born but not sure about the surname, could she have used the reputed fathers name?
