David Jones, cwmgwili factory, Abergwili
« on: Monday 25 January 10 18:12 GMT (UK) »
David Jones was the occupier of the cwmgwili woollen factory in Abergwili at the time of the 1871 census. Unfortunately his place of birth is only given as Carmarthenshire (c1822)and with a name like David Jones that is not much help. His wife, Letitia was born in Cardiganshire (c1820). I am having great difficulty in locating the family before 1871.
For the 1861 census Ancestry shows a list of enumeration districts for Abergwili in the sequence 12 to 18. District 17 does not appear in the list. Does anyone know if there is a missing district for Abergwili?
Also, does anyone know anything about the factory or where I can go to maybe find more information.

Here's hoping.

1871 the factory is in enumeration district no 15 and is enumerated next to Cwmgwili Mansion - home of the local landed proprietor Grismond Phillips. In 1861, enumeration district 15 has the same man in Cwmgwili Palace, so doesn't llok like the district is missing. No sign of the factory in that district in 1861.

Have you tried getting a birth cert for one of the children? Easiest one to trace would be Letitia aged 9 in 1871. If you apply to the local registrars for the birth stating names of parents, they should only issue the cert if correct

Thanks. I had just come to the same conclusion as I am beginning to wonder if David Jones had more than one wife. I will order Letitia's birth cert. and see where I can go from there. :)

Given his age, quite possible he'd been married before. But I think Letitia would be the daughter of Letitia. Surely too much of a coincidence that he had a daughter of that name with a different wife. The name often turns up as Lettice as well.
