Can anyone give me the location of Borrow Bridge somewhere near Orton please. Also was it a farm or a village?

That was a quick reply - thank you Kay

I don't know what they were but I have a marriage of a William Hodgson of Scarside and Ann Noble of Borrowbridge both of Orton. 1744

So I think it must have been either a farm there or settlement. If any one knows I would be grateful

Thank you Stan.

Those old maps are pretty good.
So there were houses and an Inn so probably came from around there.

Thanks

hi jeffrey
The Nobles must have been a family that lived in the Low Borrowbridge area near Orton
I've found 2 newspaper articles regarding the family

11th mar 1779 advertisment in The Cumberland Chronicle and Whitehaven Advertiser
"to let by auction at the house of Richard NOBLE,Borrowbridge ,30th march 10am-2pm. Tolls at Borrowbridge  Gate on the Turnpike road from Appleby to Kirkby Kendal, Westmorland, last year they produced 140 pounds over expenses of collecting them and they will be put up at that sum.Successful bidder must provide sureties to the trustees for payment of the rent."

The Times 27 mar 1846
"An inquest held into the death of James Karn a railway worker working on the construction of the new railway held at John Nobles ,Low Borrowbridge Inn.'

Low Borrowbridge was a small farming hamlet with a small inn ,after the railway was  constructed  the nearby village of Tebay was built .

Cheers fellsman
