Hi Monica

The 1850 one is - James Mitchell, Age: 16, cabinet wright, Address: Broomielaw Street, Glasgow, Origin: Native of Calton, Glasgow

Here is what is Ancestry -
Name: James Mitchell
Vessel: Ramillies
Convicted Date: 27 Apr 1850
Voyage Date: 25 Apr 1854
Colony: Western Australia
Piece: HO 11/18
Place of Conviction: Scotland Glasgow

I went back to Ancestry there are 22 James Mitchells were transported to Australia, must be a common name now. Went back to NAS, did a search between 1850 and 1861 again there are many entries to choose from. Do you think the 1850 & 1861 could be the same person?

Tom

PS I think the reference to 1854 is a court error, should have been 1850
Scotland - Buchanan, Thomson, Pat(t)erson, Stewart, Ritchie, Tracey
Ireland - Tracey, Conroy, Pat(t)erson.

Hi guys ;D

I am at work so no access to all my records but James Mitchell alias Young was transported on the CLYDE in 1863.  He married Elizabeth Morris(1st marraige for Elizabeth was to John Waldron-Brown drowned Swan River 1878) Elizabeth Morris was the daugher of John Morris (convict 1850 Scindian to Fremantle).

Thanks for everyones help, you all must be as addicted as me.

Kish

Have you managed to find James' marriage cert to Elizabeth or his death cert. to see what personal info re his parents they may contain?

Also, sometimes helps,  do you know the names of James and Elizabeth's children, particularly the early born following their marriage?

:) This looks promising, from the 1841 census:

James Mitchell 40, cabinet maker journeyman b. Scotland
Elizabeth Mitchell 33 b. Scotland
James Mitchell 7
Lawrence Mitchell 5 b. Scotland
Eliza Mitchell 3
John Mitchell 1

Address: A New Street, Milton Lanarkshire

B. Scotland in the 1841 census means they were born outside the county the census was taken, in this case Lanarkshire.

And from 1851, not sure if father James may have died. Transcript does not show marital status for Elizabeth, but the original image would:

Eliza Mitchell 41, head, dressmaker, b. Perth, Perthshire
Lawrence Mitchell 14, shop boy, b. Glasgow
Eliza Mitchell 12, b. Glasgow
John Mitchell 9, b. Glasgow
Andrew Mitchell 7, b. Glasgow
William I Mitchell 1, b. Glasgow
John McKain 30, lodger, carter, b. Stevenson Ayrshire
Jane McKain 33, lodger, , b. Stevenson Ayrshire
William McKain 5, lodger
John McKain 2, lodger

Address: 62 Brown St, Glasgow St George

Monica

Added: From the trial notes for 1861: 1861: Accused  James Mitchell, alias Young, Age: 28, linen draper, Address: 67 Brown Street, Glasgow, Origin: Native of Glasgow Stephen Edwards, Age: 19, tailor, Address: No fixed abode, Origin: Native of Surrey, England

In 1861, a family of Boyds show at 67 Brown Street, wife from Ireland so no connection there that I can see, but could James have been lodging there. Also, it may have been a tenement (high occupancy flats) and the household for James may have the address indexed differently that I am not picking up with an address search of '67 Brown Street'.

:) That's better and also some clues about the Mitchell alias Young names! From 1861, fitting the address for James from 1861 trial, his mother looks to have remarried a man with surname Young

Eliza Young 48, Seamans Wife R N (deefenkes) ?spl, b. Perth
Lawrence Mitchell 24, Engineers Labourer, b. Barrhead Renfrewshire
Andrew Mitchell 17, House Painter (ap), b. Glasgow
William Young    11, b. Glasgow

Address: 65-69 Brown St, Glasgow St George
