Looking to find a connection of DUNWELL in Worksop.
« on: Tuesday 01 July 14 00:18 BST (UK) »
Hello, I am trying to find a connection between Martha DUNWELL b. either Worksop or Turnerwood in 1827 or 1829 sorry so unsure, and Alice DUNWELL b. 8 May 1827 in Worksop or Turnerwood. They both have a father named William and Alice DUNWELL's mother is Mary JOHNSON.
Martha is the mother to John Dunwell BROXHOLME and married William BROXHOLME. Alice is the name of John Dunwell BROXHOLME's mother in law she married Thomas BERRY in England. I am trying to find out if it is just a coincidence that Martha (the mother) and Alice (the mother-n-law) of John have the same surname. Please and thanking you in advance for your time and trouble.

Hi Ceileste,

It looks like Martha and Alice were sisters.

Worksop St Mary baptisms
3 Jun 1827, Alice dau of William & Mary DUNWELL, labourer, of Hagginfield*
16 Nov 1828, Martha dau of William & Mary DUNHILL, labourer, of Hagginfield*
*Haggonfields is near Worksop

I don't quite understand the mother and mother-in-law bit. Are you saying that John Dunwell BROXHOLME (son of Martha Dunwell) married his cousin --- BERRY (dau of Alice Dunwell)? First cousin marriages were not particularly unusual, especially in small towns and villages.

Alexander

Thank you for answering my message. Yes I am still not sure either but, John Dunwill BROXHOLME later changing it to BROXHAM after intering the United States went on to marry a Sarah BERRY who is the daughter of Alice DUNWILL and Thomas BERRY. They married in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois in July of 1883. Sarah had previously been married to Harry BURCH and that is the name she used when marrying John. I am not sure how to go about proving the relation between the two women but will be working on it. Thank you again (a big help).

Carol, I am not sure what you are talking about. Are you asking me who is who's sister?
