Hi Jill,
I have 4 generations of KENDAL TROUGHTON,S in my tree, from THOMAS b1803,
who married JANE MATTHEWS to my Gt Grandmother, FANNY TROUGHTON,
b1849, who married WILLIAM HENRY TYSON.
Which branch of the "TROUGHTON CLAN" are you interested in? there have been a great many in KENDAL and SOUTH LAKELAND.

Ian.

Hi Ian,

Thanks for your email.

My Troughtons 'start' ( going backwards!) with my gggrandmother Sarah Troughton, baptised 1819 in Kendal. Her parents were Edward Troughton and Ann Dodd. Edward was baptised in Kendal in 1774, the son of John Troughton and Rebecca Docker. They seem to come from Fellside in Kendal.

I think I can trace them back as far as Willian Troughton married Agnes Harrison in Kendal in 1705 but that's still a bit sketchy!

Do any of those names mean anything to you? As you say, there do seem to have been a lot of Troughtons in Kendal - I think the name must have originated there because it doesn't seem to be that common a name elsewhere.

Best wishes,
Jill

Hi Jill,
I will be in the Kendal Archives one day next week and will see what else I can
find from the 1841 census, and Parish Pecords. Will contact you again.
You might find the following transcription, from the Dictionary of English
surnames, of interest.
"TROUGHTON.- Local of Troughton, a small estate, now Troughton Hall, in Woodlands near Ulverston, North Lancashire.
The surname is very familiar in the distrct.
1574. Bapt.-William Troughton; St Mary, Ulverston.
Buried Anne Troughton ibid p 5.
1549 Bapt.- Elizabeth Troughton; ibid p 8.
1584 Ann Troughton of Ulverston "

Hi Ian,

That's very interesting, I had no idea that the name was actually derived from a place name.

I'll certainly be interested in anything you can discover at the Records Office. I live in East Yorks so have had to resort to requesting them to do some paid research. Amongst other things, I'm trying to find the marriage of Richard Troughton and Jane(surname unknown) in about 1732. So far, the only likely one is in 1737 in Sedbergh between Richard Troughton and Jane Fridge ( yes - Fridge - I kid you not!) It's actually looking quite promising because, although they married in Sedbergh,he came from Kendal and Jane Fridge came from Strickland Roger (is that now part of Kendal)?

Hope to hear from you soon,
Best wishes,
Jill

Hi Jill,
I forgot to say in my last message, have you looked at Carol Foreman's
"Troughton Family Genealogy of Westmorland" site?

Hi Ron,

I'm not sure I'd have any info to swap. Its possible that Bobby might be the child of one of my Fellside Troughtons (i.e. the son of one of my Sarah's brothers) but its probably a bit of a long shot.

Hello Jill

Robert "Bobby" Troughton lived in the area known as Fell side for much if not all of his life. I'm just an interested party in the history of the Troughton's, trying to compile so kind of family tree for the appendices of my book, I'm intending to begin with his parents and then he / siblings and take it from there,
