your opinions please ?
« on: Friday 04 January 13 19:37 GMT (UK) »
On the 1911 census, I have one John HIGGS "married to" Margaret (nee Hoskins).
Their children:
Arthur Hoskins (1894)
Florence Hoskins (1896)
Elsie Hoskins (1896)
Trevor Hoskins (1904)
John Henry Higgs (1909) and
Phylis Higgs (1911)

According to the census they had 6 children born alive, 4 living and 2 died (got those covered!)

What I am a bit flummoxed with are the 2 Higgs children .... I can't find anything fro them after the 1911 census .... but looking at the Bedwellty births/deaths around that time there are:

John Henry Higgs b Spetember quarter 1908 - Bedwellty and died December quarter 1909, Bedwellty
and Phylis Higgs b December quarter 1910, Bedwellty and died March quarter 1911, Bedwellty.

Both these births fit, but they should both be dead, and therefore not on the 1911 census if these are them - and it's a coincidence too, don't you think?

I have a MC for the DAUGHTER of Arthur Hoskins in 1931, and one of the witnesses on there is a J HIGGS - it could be John Higgs Senior, as he'd only be 51 ...

I still can't find a marriage for Margaret and John either ....  >:(

Perhaps they didn't understand the question on the census and included the names of all children, dead or alive.

Maybe .... but there were 6 children on the 1911 census, and that would mean 4 had died (as they'd already lost 2 that I can account for) ....
soo annoying !!  :)

As suggested earlier perhaps they did not understand the question, but then they still got the numbers wrong.

However another possibility is that if John filled out the census perhaps he was not aware of (or did not consider) the Hoskins children who had died?

I also cannot find a marriage for John Higgs & Margaret, but I cannot also find a death for Margarets first husband James Hoskins.

However there is a marriage for a James Hoskins to a Margaret Meredith Sept 1891 at Crickhowell 11b 154.

There are also 3 bedwellty births for Higgs children with a mother Meredith in 1912 (William J), 1913 (Hubert I - died 1914) and 1915 (Frances I).  Not found a Higgs/Meredith marriage.

There is also a family tree on Ancestry which has James Hoskins marrying Margaret Elizabeth Meredith and names 5 children: Arthur, Florence, Hilda, Elsie & Tevor.

Thank you for your reply, and for double checking.

The Meredith / Hoskins marriage is correct, but that's her first one.  I can't find a death for James Hoskins either (but it could have been mis-transcribed - I have a FEW of those !!) he was a pit worker .. this is definately her on the 1911 census, as this is my area, so I know the address to be correct from other sources (family, Marriage certificates etc)

The Ancestry tree person I am in contact with, but she wasn't aware of this added bit of family information.  Her side of the family moved away from Wales, and there were only a couple remaining.

It is quite possible that he didn't list or know of all the children ...

The odd thing is too, the children shown on the 1911 census have deaths that fit their year of birth, but shouldn't be alive in 1911 ... I also thought these could be other children, called the same .. but the age/year of birth doesn't fit .....

I love this game :)
