Robert John Elliott, Clergyman, b.1832 d.1901 Are there directories?
« on: Thursday 20 November 14 15:38 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I've been trying to discover as much as I can about the career course of Robert John ELLIOTT, born 1832 in Petworth, Sussex, died 1901 in Redhill, Surrey.  I have found glimpses of him throughout his life - born into a family where his father William was a corn merchant and farmer in 1841; his brothers seemed to be continuing the family farming tradition, but obviously Robert had other ideas for a career. Can't find him in 1851.  In 1861 he is a curate "of Horton", living in Cowpen, Northumberland as a lodger.  In 1871 and in 1881 he is the parish priest of St Stephen's Poplar, living in the Parsonage in East India Rd.  At the time of his death in 1901 he was the priest at St Margaret's Redhill.
What kind of education would he have had to complete in the 1840's/1850's - did it have to be Oxbridge, or at least some kind of Ecclesiastical College, and are there directories in which I might to be able to locate him?
Many thanks, Keith

Hatfield College is the second oldest of Durham University's Colleges. It was established in 1846, and originally known as Hatfield Hall.

Do you have access to either of the online archives of British newspapers?  Clergy often get a mention when they move from one parish to another, and marriage notices sometimes mention the name of the minister who performed the ceremony. You'll probably find more references if you just search for him as R J Elliott, or Rev R J Elliott.

Stan…to the rescue again, thanks so much! and also the interpretation of hieroglyphics to let me know how he progressed as a man of the cloth
..and thanks Galium for the suggestion of the British newspaper archives.  Don't have access myself, but I know someone who does…
Keith
p.s. Then (messages crossing) I shan't bother the person with access after all, as Stan has got there first!  Thanks for looking...

Thanks, Stan, for pinpointing that more precisely.  I'll see if I can view it…
