Cappanacush East
« on: Thursday 07 August 08 10:19 BST (UK) »
Hi all
Have finally found a tiny chink in the wall of my Irish ancestors.
G/Grandad spent at least from 1852 (Griffiths Val.) to 1859 (his daughter's baptism) living in Cappanacush East near Kenmare.
He rented 17 acres from Rev Daniel Mahoney and was probably his Land Steward (daughters b/cert)
I've tried Google earthing it but can't get close enough without it blurring.
Can anyone tell me please if there is a village there, or maybe just a few houses? It looks very green as if a lot of trees.
Sylvia
oops modified...landowner should be Rev. Denis Mahoney

If you get on to this site it shows a site for sale in Cappanacush and gives some photographs of the area and where it is situated. It is a townland not a village.

Oh gosh, sorry for the delay  :-[

Annaclare - thanks for that link, it looks very wild and uncultivated doesn't it.
Aghhadowey - thanks that's where I found G/grandad's land. His entry says land and house so I thought maybe there would be other buildings there.

Have also found the other possible g/grandad at Cappanacush West...this is very exciting

If it says 'house and land' in Griffith's then he had a house with some land (acreage will be noted as well as value of building(s)). 'Offices' are outbuildings such as barns, stables, pig houses, etc.

Looking at the map on the Griffiths Valuation site this seems to be the right view from Cappanacush where g/grandad lived. Wonderful! 8)

Hi. Your g/grandad was a neighbour of my g/grandfather in cappanacush east. The lands there all gone for sites now. When I first visited in 1980s the remains of the thatched cottages still there.
The view down to water is spot on.
