Coffins Farm, Lynton
« on: Wednesday 11 October 06 17:04 BST (UK) »
Could anybody give me any information on this farm as my ancestors farmed this property from 1841-1891 (not sure as havent found them or property on 1901 census yet!).

It was first farmed by a William Jones born c1798 and then by his son-in-law another William Jones born c1828.

Any info, such as where it was, does it still exist would be much appreciated and any photos would be even better!  :)

Many Thanx

Have you got access to Ancestry ?

If so, you can examine the 'Enumerators Pages' - which describes their 'walk' around the district - and combined with the address shown for the actual enumerated names, should give you a feel for the location.

Photos ! Maybe the local Papers or Library ?

The younger William is at home with Father Richard on a property called Six Acres .. in 1851

Here's the older William in 1851 - the Farm is 160 acres, called 'Coffins' - the 20th dwelling on the Enumerators 'walk' - and close by 'Six Acre'  ... the District description doesnt help locate it, but does name a mixture of hamlets and farms that a local might piece together.

Later census may be more specific ...

If you go to "Old Maps", and choose "Co-ordinate" then enter 269293, 147998 you'll see Coffins Heanton Farm.  It's also shown on Get-a-map if you enter Lynton, then click once to the east. On there it's named as Caffyns Heanton Farm.

Hi Delyth

According to the "Return of Owners of Land - Devon 1873" a Philip JONES owned just over 7 acres of land at Lynton at this date. The land had a gross annual rental value of 10 shillings.

The return recorded all who owned an acre or more of land in the county in 1873.
